“A Mystic’s Blessing: BY:Khan A Journey from Pride to Compassion”Today, the divine punishment that has descended upon the world is a result of humanity’s disobedience to Allah and their excessive love for wealth and possessions. Every individual now turns to repentance. Our habit has become such that whenever a personal or collective calamity strikes, we rush to God in repentance. But when the trouble passes, we return to our selfish lives—helping no one, and considering anyone poorer than ourselves as inferior. There is neither true love for God nor for His creation; only self-love and love for one’s own children remain. However, those who sincerely love God and His creation are protected from every divine calamity. If, this time, every person repents sincerely and promises to help others, disaster could be averted. This is the story of one such person who repented wholeheartedly. God blessed him with the life of his son through the prayers of a mystic, and today he is the owner of a very large company. His father, Rana Asif, showed how to serve God’s creation. I take the liberty of sharing this story. A few months ago, I went to Karachi to attend a wedding. My friend Altaf Qadir had also come from Italy after a long time. One day, we went to a famous shop in Saddar to eat nihari, which was well-known. That night, all seats were full, and there was a long line outside. By chance, we found a vacant seat in front of the shop owner. Although the prices were high, people were ready to spend on themselves but not on feeding a poor person a single meal. Curious, we asked a staff member about the long line. He quietly said, “Those outside won’t get free food from the owner.” People would quietly pay the owner and leave. That day, no one from outside did. The line eventually ended, yet the food was not finished—a true blessing. The earnings of this person, whatever they were, belonged to a mystic of the era. While we were busy eating nihari, a man in simple clothes carrying a bag came to the owner. The owner took him inside a room. The same owner who usually ignored customers treated this man with great respect, seeing him off all the way outside. I realized my own attitude had been flawed. After we finished, that man stood in line with other needy people to get his meal. I asked who he was and learned that the owner had given him such respect because a mystic had changed his life. I later met him and introduced myself. He smiled and said, “You’re lying in a kind way, following me from Saddar. Do you need any help?” He opened a cabinet filled with notes, mostly in large denominations of five thousand, and said, “Take whatever you need.” I refused, saying, “I live on a modest pension, thanks to your prayers.” He replied, “I am here to help God’s creation a little and to try to protect myself from the punishment of the grave.” He then shared how his life had transformed. His name was Waqar Usmani. His late father owned a large company, and after his passing, Waqar became the sole owner. His wife came from a wealthy, educated family. Over time, Waqar had become proud and selfish, never giving charity or helping the needy, even humiliating poor relatives who came to his house. They had one son, whom they educated well. Suddenly, the boy fell gravely ill. Despite consulting doctors in Pakistan and abroad, the boy’s condition worsened, leaving only a skeletal frame. Doctors eventually said he wouldn’t survive long. In despair, Waqar and his wife turned to God, seeking forgiveness and began giving zakat and charity, praying sincerely for their son’s life at least until Eid. On the 27th of Ramadan, as Waqar and his wife were sitting for iftar, a mystic arrived at their home. Respectfully, they invited him to break his fast. Moments later, their son began crying violently. The mystic comforted them, saying, “Have faith in Allah; nothing will happen.” After a short while, the crying stopped. Following the call to prayer, they prayed and broke their fast. Their son was miraculously healed through the mystic’s prayers. Waqar and his wife fell at the mystic’s feet, overwhelmed with gratitude. Waqar offered a briefcase full of money as a gift, but the mystic refused, saying, “This is what filled you with pride.” Instead, he advised Waqar: love God and His creation, and spend wealth in God’s way. Following this, Waqar handed over the company to his son Yasir and dedicated his own life to serving humanity.

Aunt Grace and the Companions of the Forest It was during my stay in Europe that this unforgettable incident took place. I was visiting London and staying at my friend’s house. One morning, while we were sitting together, she suddenly said, “Let’s go for a walk in the forest. I’ll show you something interesting.” Startled, I looked at her. “In the forest? Oh no! I don’t want to go there. The thought of a lonely forest frightens me.” She laughed softly. “There is nothing to be afraid of. I want you to meet my aunt. She lives there.” “Aunt?” I asked in disbelief. “Did you say she lives in the forest?” “Yes,” my friend replied, smiling at my expression. “She has a little house there. A few other people live nearby as well, but the houses are scattered. You’ll like her.” I was not convinced, but out of politeness I agreed to go. We got into her car and drove for about an hour. Gradually the city disappeared behind us and tall, dark trees surrounded us on both sides. The deeper we went, the quieter it became. Finally, after a winding path, we arrived at a small cottage nestled among the trees. “This is Aunt Grace’s home,” my friend said cheerfully as we stepped out. We walked up to the cottage and pushed the little wooden gate. The place was so quiet that I almost felt we had entered another world. From inside the cottage, we could hear faint sounds of utensils clinking. My friend smiled knowingly. “She’s making tea for us. I told her we were coming.” Soon, a graceful elderly lady appeared from the kitchen. She was carrying a tray, and the warmth in her eyes instantly eased my nervousness. My friend introduced us. “Aunt Grace, this is my friend from Pakistan.” “Welcome, my darling,” Aunt Grace said, kissing me lightly on the cheek. There was such genuine affection in her gesture that I felt touched. We sat in her cozy living room. Aunt Grace served us tea, biscuits, and some chocolate. As I sipped the hot tea, I glanced around the house. The cottage was neat, but the silence surrounding it gave me shivers. Outside, the dense forest stretched endlessly, and only a few cottages stood far apart. My friend had told me that sometimes hunters came to stay in these houses. Otherwise, most of them remained empty, guarded only by caretakers. I could not imagine how this frail-looking, elderly woman could live here all alone. The thought itself made me uneasy. I finally asked, “Aunt, do you really live here by yourself? Don’t you have children?” She smiled gently. “Yes, I have two children. Both are married now and live with their families. They visit me sometimes, but most of the time I am here alone.” Her calmness surprised me. I couldn’t help asking further. “But Aunt, don’t you get scared? I mean, if this house were in the city, living alone would not be strange. But here, in the middle of a forest, with silence everywhere… isn’t it frightening?” She chuckled softly. “Oh dear, I am not alone. Many companions live with me.” Before I could understand what she meant, she picked up a whistle from the table and motioned us toward the veranda. Curious, we followed her. She blew the whistle gently. Within moments, I saw a breathtaking sight—dozens of colorful birds fluttered down from the trees and settled on her shoulders, arms, and the railing. “Here they are,” she said with a smile, stroking one bird lovingly. “These are my children. They eat with me, they talk to me, and they keep me company. See how many they are?” She kissed the beak of a little bird as if it were her own baby. I stood speechless, marveling at the bond between this woman and her feathered companions. She noticed my astonishment and continued, “Not only birds, but I also have two cats and two dogs. They, too, are part of my family.” I was bewildered. How could someone live in such a lonely forest with only animals for company? Aunt Grace seemed to read my thoughts. She called softly, and two cats appeared quietly, rubbing themselves against her legs before sitting peacefully beside her. “The dogs are probably wandering around right now,” she explained. “They will come soon.” I asked hesitantly, “Aunt, don’t the cats and dogs fight with each other?” She laughed again. “Oh, they used to fight in the beginning, of course. But I trained them with patience and love. Now they behave so well that if they even start quarreling, a single glance from me is enough. They immediately sit in their places quietly. They know my signals, and they obey.” Her words amazed me. I thought to myself, it takes so much effort to discipline a human being, and here she had trained animals and birds to live in harmony under one roof. This woman, whom I had first imagined as lonely and vulnerable, now appeared before me as strong, courageous, and content. She had discovered her own way of overcoming solitude. Where most people would have sunk into depression, she had created a little paradise of companionship with creatures of the forest. When it was time to leave, I was reluctant. As we drove back through the forest, I kept thinking. We humans often fail to live happily even among our families, friends, and crowded cities. We constantly complain of loneliness, misunderstanding, and lack of love. And here was Aunt Grace, living deep inside a forest, with no human company most of the time, yet she was cheerful and fulfilled—thanks to the loyalty of birds, cats, and dogs. That day I realized something important. Happiness is not about how many people surround us; it is about how we choose to live, how we open our hearts, and how we appreciate the companionship that God provides in different forms. In this wide world, people live in many different ways. Some need bustling streets and large gatherings, while others, like Aunt Grace, need nothing more than the songs of birds and the affection of a few animals. God, in His wisdom, grants every soul a unique path to survive and to smile. As the car rolled back toward the city, I silently prayed for Aunt Grace. May her forest companions always keep her company. And may we, too, learn to find joy in what we have, rather than lament over what we lack.

Today was not just any ordinary day for him—it was one of the most awaited days of the school year. The annual sports festival was right around the corner, and Ahmed was determined to shine in the race. For months he had dreamed of winning first place, and this year he was ready to turn that dream into reality. For the past two months, Ahmed had been training with great dedication. Every morning, before school, he ran laps around the park. In the evenings, he often stretched, practiced breathing exercises, and followed the advice of his father. Ahmed’s father was a highly energetic man, who had once been an athlete himself. Whenever Ahmed felt tired or unmotivated, his father encouraged him with words of wisdom. “Remember, son,” his father often said, “if you want to win, you must train regularly. It is not enough to wish for victory—you must prepare your body and mind for it.” Ahmed had taken this advice seriously, and he was happy to notice gradual improvement in his stamina. Where once he could barely complete a lap, now he could run several without stopping. His speed was improving, and his breathing was steadier. Every small victory filled him with confidence. That morning, Ahmed reached the park earlier than usual. He wanted to get in some practice before his friend Irfan joined him. After tying his shoelaces tightly, Ahmed began running. The cool morning breeze brushed against his face, and the rhythmic sound of his footsteps echoed in his ears. He completed two laps before Irfan finally arrived, slightly out of breath just from walking to the park. “Come on, Irfan!” Ahmed called out cheerfully. “Let’s run together today. The race is only a few days away, and we need to prepare.” Irfan smiled and nodded. The two friends began running side by side. At first, everything seemed fine, but after a few minutes, Irfan’s steps grew heavier. His breathing became rough and uneven. Suddenly, he stumbled and fell to the ground, clutching his chest as he gasped for air. Ahmed quickly stopped and rushed toward his friend. “Irfan! What happened?” he asked in alarm. Irfan shook his head weakly. “I don’t know… I feel so weak. I don’t have the strength to keep running. My body feels exhausted.” Ahmed frowned with concern. “But Irfan, how will you participate in the race if you can’t even finish a lap?” “I know,” Irfan said sadly. “I want to run, but my body won’t let me. What should I do?” Ahmed thought for a moment, then remembered his father’s guidance. “Don’t worry, Irfan. My father explained everything to me. I’ll share it with you. The first thing you need to do is work on your health. It’s not only about running—it’s about your whole lifestyle.” “But my weight looks fine,” Irfan interrupted. Ahmed shook his head. “You may look fine, but appearances can be misleading. You need to check your BMI.” “BMI? What’s that?” Irfan asked curiously. “It stands for Body Mass Index,” Ahmed explained patiently. “It’s a way to measure if your weight is healthy compared to your height and age. It helps you know whether you are underweight, overweight, or just right. A healthy BMI means your body is balanced, and you’ll have better energy for sports.” Irfan nodded slowly, trying to understand. “So, what should I do to improve?” “First,” Ahmed replied firmly, “you must exercise every day. At least one hour of physical activity is necessary. You can run, play football, or even walk briskly. The important thing is to move your body regularly.” Irfan raised an eyebrow. “Football? How will that help me run faster?” Ahmed smiled. “Playing football makes your muscles and nerves stronger. It improves your stamina, coordination, and reflexes. Plus, it’s fun—you won’t even realize how much you’re exercising while playing.” Irfan’s eyes lit up a little. “That sounds interesting. I’ll try playing football daily.” “That’s great,” Ahmed encouraged him. “But remember, exercise alone is not enough. You also need a healthy, balanced diet. That means fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, and foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Junk food might taste good, but it makes you weaker in the long run. Strong athletes build their strength not just on the track but also at the dining table.” Irfan chuckled. “So, no more fries and soft drinks?” Ahmed laughed. “At least not every day. Save them for special occasions. Your body deserves better fuel.” With that, Ahmed picked up the football lying nearby. “Come on, let’s start now. The more we practice, the better we’ll feel.” The two friends began kicking the ball around. Soon, laughter filled the park as they chased it across the grass. Even though Irfan grew tired quickly, he was determined to keep trying. Ahmed encouraged him at every step, reminding him that improvement takes time and effort. As the sun climbed higher, the boys sat on a bench, sipping water and catching their breath. Ahmed looked at his friend seriously. “You know, Irfan, sports are not just about winning medals. They’re about keeping our bodies strong and our minds sharp. If we don’t take care of our health now, we’ll regret it later.” Irfan nodded thoughtfully. “You’re right. I never realized how important exercise and diet are. I only thought about the race, not the preparation behind it. From now on, I’ll take it seriously.” Ahmed patted his friend on the shoulder. “That’s the spirit. Together, we’ll become stronger and healthier. And who knows? Maybe this year, we’ll both win something at the sports festival.” The two boys grinned at each other, their friendship strengthened not just by play, but by a shared promise to care for their health. And to all the children reading their story, Ahmed had one final message: “Dear kids, remember that sports and exercise are essential for your health. Play daily, eat a balanced diet, and keep your body active. A healthy lifestyle today will build a stronger future for you tomorrow.”

The central narrative of the opera—a deep friendship challenged by love and sacrifice—serves as the emotional anchor for this piece. “Breaking Free”
My thoughts: This is a very special piece to me. I made it back when I was in college, unknowing of the symbolism of it, not really paying attention to that aspect. What I can tell you now is I think this piece definitely represents me, and breaking through all of the struggles I have been in throughout my life. I used to be too nervous to share my art, thinking that I'm just not a good enough artist. Now, as I look at myself, as I have learned to overcome all these obstacles and learn to start loving myself, I look at this painting and think "wow, what an amazing individual". The Journey of Honesty BY: Ubaid Islam Shahid… The train to Lahore was swiftly moving towards its destination. The severe cold had forced the passengers to close all the windows and doors. The night had grown deep, and the chill in the air was unbearable. Irfan, lost in his thoughts, was journeying toward his destination, but his mind was far away, filled with worry for his elderly mother whom he was leaving behind, tears in her eyes, as he went in search of work in another city. Irfan was the pride of a respectable family. His father worked in a factory, and life was once happy and peaceful. But, as fate would have it, tragedy struck their lives. One day, when Irfan returned home from school, he was met with devastating news—his father had passed away and left him and his mother alone in this world. Irfan’s mother was inconsolable, crying day and night, unable to accept the loss. Irfan, too, felt the immense grief of losing his father, yet he knew there was no choice but to endure it. After his father’s death, the household’s financial situation deteriorated rapidly. With no one to earn for the family, survival became a daily struggle. Irfan, a conscientious and determined young man, could not bear the thought of his family going hungry while he remained idle. He began searching for work in his city, but every attempt ended in disappointment. Doors closed on him everywhere he went, and hope seemed to fade. Finally, feeling helpless, Irfan approached his mother and requested permission to move to another city in search of a job. After much reluctance and emotional pleading, his mother agreed, though with a heavy heart. Carrying only a small bag of belongings, Irfan boarded the train to the new city, his heart a mix of anxiety and determination. “Ticket, please,” the ticket inspector’s harsh voice broke through Irfan’s thoughts. He quickly presented his ticket, and the inspector checked it before moving on. Irfan looked at his watch; it was three in the morning. Soon, his stop arrived, and he stepped off the train onto the empty platform. A gust of cold wind hit him immediately, making him shiver. The night was still young, and he decided to wait until morning at the station. As he searched for a suitable spot to rest, his eyes fell on a wallet lying on the floor. Curious, he picked it up and opened it. To his surprise, it contained a large sum of money. Alongside the cash was an identity card with an address from a nearby city. Irfan’s heart swelled with determination. Despite his own difficulties, he resolved to return the wallet to its rightful owner. Shortly afterward, a bus heading to the indicated city arrived, and Irfan boarded it, his resolve firm. After a while, the bus reached the city. Irfan got off and began searching for the address on the ID card. The sun was rising, spreading its warm rays across the city. After some searching, he found the house—a beautifully constructed building reflecting the owner’s success. He rang the doorbell, and a well-dressed young man appeared. Irfan stepped forward, shook his hand, and showed him the identity card. He explained everything—the wallet, the money, and his intent to return it to its owner. The young man was deeply impressed by Irfan’s honesty. He invited him inside, served him with warmth and respect, and asked why he had come to this city. Irfan explained that he had come to find work to support his family. This young man was the owner of a large factory. He was so moved by Irfan’s integrity that he immediately offered him a job at his factory. Irfan could hardly believe his fortune. His honesty and courage had led him to success and security in a city far from home. Irfan’s story soon became an example in the city. People admired his perseverance, honesty, and moral strength. He proved that no matter how difficult life becomes, one should never lose hope, and honesty always brings its rewards. From Irfan’s journey, we learn a valuable lesson: life will present challenges and hardships, but fear and despair are never solutions. Patience, determination, and integrity can guide us through the darkest times. Even when life seems unfair and full of obstacles, staying true to one’s principles can open doors to opportunities that we never imagined. Irfan’s story reminds us that our actions define us more than our circumstances. By choosing honesty over personal gain, he not only helped someone in need but also secured a brighter future for himself. It was not luck that rewarded him, but his courage to do what was right, even when no one was watching. In a world where shortcuts and deceit often seem tempting, Irfan’s story serves as a beacon of hope. It encourages us to hold on to our values, no matter the trials we face. Just like Irfan, we must face challenges with courage and integrity, trusting that the right path, though difficult, ultimately leads to success and fulfillment. Through perseverance and honesty, Irfan transformed a moment of chance into a turning point in his life. The young man who had been wandering, anxious and uncertain, became a respected employee in a thriving factory, carrying the dignity of his family and the pride of his own character. And so, Irfan’s journey continues to inspire generations, teaching that honesty is not just a moral choice but a path to true achievement and inner peace. ---

He was a keen observer of life’s ups and downs, someone who had lived through struggles and challenges, and had risen to become one of the most admired personalities of his time. What made his story even more fascinating was his humble background. Born to poor parents in America, without striking looks or privilege, he nevertheless climbed the steep path to fame and success. People often wondered: How did a boy from such modest beginnings manage to reach the height of popularity and respect? His life had become a mystery that many longed to uncover. A local social and welfare organization, known for inviting great reformers, decided to host John Hilton as the chief guest in one of their biggest programs. They believed his words could inspire the community and provide guidance to young people. Within days, banners and posters flooded the city—on shopping malls, bus stops, street corners, and shop walls. Everywhere you turned, there was an announcement: “Professor John Hilton – Live Address to the Citizens.” The entire city buzzed with anticipation. When the day arrived, the response was overwhelming. Citizens from all walks of life poured into the auditorium. The crowd was so immense that people could barely find room to stand. Inside the hall, heads stretched as far as the eye could see. Outside, the streets and surrounding areas overflowed with people desperate to catch a glimpse of John Hilton. The organizers grew concerned about the situation. How would John Hilton even enter the building through such a crowd? After consulting with government officials, they decided to bring him by helicopter and land him on the auditorium’s rooftop. From there, he could descend through the stairs and reach the stage safely. The plan worked. The helicopter landed, and soon John Hilton appeared on stage. The hall erupted in applause. People expected to hear life-changing secrets and golden words of wisdom. On the corner of the stage stood a simple wooden table. John Hilton quietly pulled it to the very front, ensuring everyone could see. Upon the table sat a single crystal ball. The audience leaned forward curiously. Then, in complete silence, John Hilton took out a pen from his pocket. He bent down, touched the pen to the crystal ball, and began to spin it gently. The ball rotated, slowly at first, then steadily. Minutes passed. The people waited, whispering among themselves. Five minutes… ten minutes… fifteen minutes. Still, John Hilton said nothing. His entire attention remained fixed on the spinning ball. Confusion spread across the crowd. “Why isn’t he speaking?” some murmured. “Is this some kind of trick?” others asked. A few impatient ones whispered, “Maybe he has lost his ability to speak. Perhaps he has grown too old.” Disappointment started creeping in. Many in the audience had expected powerful speeches, captivating stories, and the secret formula for success. Instead, they were being shown a spinning ball. Gradually, frustration overcame their excitement. People began leaving. One by one, rows started emptying. The once jam-packed auditorium grew thinner and thinner. Outside too, the murmurs of dissatisfaction spread. John Hilton, however, continued spinning the ball calmly, without lifting his head. After another fifteen minutes, he finally raised his eyes. To his surprise—or perhaps as he had expected—the hall was nearly empty. Where once there had been a sea of thousands, now only a handful of individuals remained. They were so few in number that one could easily count them on the fingers of both hands. At this point, John Hilton stopped. He placed the pen aside, picked up the microphone, and for the very first time, spoke in a thunderous, commanding voice: “These are the people who will succeed in life. The ones who stayed, the ones who endured, the ones who waited—these are the truly successful ones. The rest, who left impatiently, they are gone.” His words echoed through the empty hall. The chosen few who had stayed behind looked at each other, realizing the depth of the lesson. Without saying more, John Hilton stepped down from the stage, walked out of the hall, and climbed back into the waiting helicopter on the rooftop. As the helicopter lifted into the sky, the crowd outside watched in awe. The short yet powerful message he left behind became the talk of the entire city. --- The Lesson In just one sentence, John Hilton had delivered an extraordinary truth about life and success. The poor man was kindhearted and generous by nature. He had a big dream in his heart: he wished to educate his little children so that they could live a better life than he did. He longed to see them in schools, reading books, and growing into wise individuals. But the reality was harsh—he did not have enough money to afford school fees, books, or other educational expenses. Still, he never gave up hope. Another remarkable quality of the man was his compassion for others. Despite his poverty, he could not see anyone hungry. If he had only a little food and saw another person starving, he would always share his meal, even if it meant he himself would remain half-hungry.
