Why Paying With Your Phone Is Safer Than Using a Bank Card

Your bank card contains nearly everything a fraudster needs to access your money. Printed directly on the card are the card number, expiration date, and security code—details that can be exploited to make unauthorized online purchases. While banks have strengthened security through two-factor authentication and one-time verification codes, cybercriminals continue to find ways to steal card information and misuse it.
The risks become even greater when consumers hand their physical card to a merchant. Even in legitimate businesses, card details may pass through payment terminals or point-of-sale systems that store payment information. If those systems are later compromised in a cyberattack, sensitive customer data can be exposed.
To address these vulnerabilities, technology companies have developed digital wallet services that add an extra layer of security. Platforms such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay encrypt payment credentials and replace the actual card number with a secure digital token, making it far more difficult for criminals to steal usable financial information.
This security model challenges the common assumption that paying with a plastic card is safer than using a smartphone. Although some users worry that a stolen phone poses a greater risk than a lost bank card, modern mobile payment systems are specifically designed to protect financial data even if the device falls into the wrong hands.
How Mobile Payment Services Work
Although Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay use slightly different technologies, they all rely on the same core principle: keeping your real card details hidden during every transaction.
When a user adds a payment card to a digital wallet, the card information is encrypted and stored securely within a protected area of the smartphone. Instead of transmitting the real card number during purchases, the system generates a unique virtual account number—often referred to as a payment token—that is linked to the user's bank.
Whenever a customer pays using Apple Pay, for example, the merchant receives only this tokenized number rather than the actual credit or debit card details. The smartphone then securely communicates with the issuing bank to authorize the payment without revealing the real account information.
Behind the scenes, this process involves sophisticated encryption, authentication protocols, and secure hardware components that operate automatically without requiring user intervention.
Why Digital Wallets Offer Better Protection
The primary advantage of mobile payment services lies in tokenization.
Even if hackers manage to intercept the token associated with a digital wallet transaction, it cannot simply be reused elsewhere. The token is tied to a specific device and functions only through that authorized smartphone and its associated payment service.
As a result, stealing the virtual card number alone is generally useless for making purchases online or elsewhere without also possessing the registered device.
Modern smartphones also add another layer of defense by requiring biometric authentication—such as facial recognition or fingerprint scanning—or a secure passcode before authorizing payments.
By contrast, physical bank cards expose all critical payment information directly on the card itself. If criminals obtain those details, they may attempt fraudulent online purchases, sometimes even bypassing additional verification methods.
Some marketplaces operating on the dark web reportedly facilitate transactions where stolen payment credentials can be exploited without requiring standard verification codes, increasing the risks associated with compromised physical cards.
Security Experts Favor Digital Wallets
A CNBC report published in June 2026 ranked digital payment services such as Apple Pay among the safest methods for making online purchases, highlighting the advantages of tokenization and device-based authentication.
Cybersecurity company Norton has reached a similar conclusion, explaining that Apple Pay hides users' actual payment card numbers—even from Apple itself. Instead, the service relies on encrypted device-specific tokens, reducing the likelihood that sensitive banking information could be exposed during transactions.
According to cybersecurity specialists, this architecture makes Apple Pay one of the most secure consumer payment systems currently available because merchants never receive or store customers' real card numbers.
No Payment System Is Completely Immune
Despite these advantages, experts caution that no digital payment platform is entirely invulnerable.
A widely discussed demonstration by technology YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), conducted in collaboration with researchers featured by the Veritasium YouTube channel, highlighted a specialized vulnerability affecting Apple Pay under highly specific circumstances.
The exploit relied on convincing a smartphone that it was processing a payment for a public transportation system, allowing certain transactions to occur without requiring the device owner's usual authentication.
However, the weakness is not new. Researchers from the Universities of Surrey and Birmingham first disclosed it in 2021. Importantly, the issue affected Visa cards only and did not extend to Mastercard or several other payment networks.
Following renewed attention to the vulnerability, technology publication MacRumors reported that Visa maintained the exploit would be extremely difficult to reproduce in real-world situations, significantly limiting the practical risk to everyday consumers.

For most users, paying with a smartphone offers stronger protection than using a physical bank card. By replacing sensitive card numbers with encrypted digital tokens and combining them with biometric authentication, services such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay dramatically reduce the chances that stolen payment information can be reused by cybercriminals.
While no payment technology can guarantee absolute security, digital wallets represent one of the most effective defenses currently available against card fraud, data theft, and unauthorized online transactions.
