If you're reading this, then you probably have some idea of what cybersecurity is (at least, I'm hoping so!). However, whenever I ask people when they consider cybersecurity issues to have become critical, few people can give me a concrete answer. This article is designed to explore that very question!

Cybercrime first became a real issue in the 1980s.

When did cybersecurity become a serious issue? Cybercrime first became a real issue in the 1980s. At that time, for example, the University of California Berkeley's Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) created the first version of Kerberos, which is still used today as a network authentication protocol. In 1991, Congress passed the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), which required federal agencies to follow certain rules when it came to protecting their information systems.

But many companies didn't follow these guidelines until they were forced to do so by government regulations, such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and HIPAA Omnibus Rule (Amendments). In 2002, Congress passed the Patriot Act as part of an effort to thwart terrorism after 9-11; many privacy advocates believe that this law also has had a negative impact on cybersecurity because it gives law enforcement agencies more power than they need — or deserve — to investigate suspected criminals and terrorists.

For example, Section 215 of the Patriot Act allows government agencies to obtain personal records from businesses without showing probable cause or obtaining court approval first.

Almost 30 years ago, we saw the first cases of cybercrime, when hackers broke into systems at universities and government agencies.

Cybersecurity has been a serious issue for the last 30 years, but it wasn't until recently that it became apparent to the general public. Back in 1988, a group of hackers broke into computer systems at universities and government agencies. At the time, no one thought much of it — these were isolated incidents with little impact on society as a whole.

But over the next three decades, cybercrime grew into an epidemic. Nowadays, we're seeing more and more stories about cyberattacks, data breaches, and ransomware attacks in all sectors of society: private companies, public institutions, and even individuals. And while most people are aware of these threats now (thanks to media coverage), they still don't know how to protect themselves from them.

In this guide we'll cover everything you need to know about cybersecurity so that you can protect yourself from cyberattacks and keep your data safe from harm.

In the 1990s and 2000s, cybercriminals launched email attacks.

Cybersecurity is the process of protecting information and information systems from theft or damage to the hardware, software, and firmware of a computer system. Cybersecurity may be considered to be a subset of "information assurance", which is composed of control functions that protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and information.

Cybersecurity has been commonly defined as "the prevention of damage to computer systems, programs and data." A more expansive definition of cybersecurity may include preventing any unauthorized activity within a computer system in any way. In the 1990s and 2000s, cybercriminals launched email attacks that infected computers with malicious software designed to steal passwords or credit card numbers or otherwise harm computers or their users.

Some early attacks were launched from chat rooms or newsgroups via viruses attached to messages; later attacks used spoofed websites that imitated bank sites to trick users into giving up sensitive information.

They sent out phishing emails designed to trick people into giving up their personal information.

Cybersecurity has become a major concern for businesses, governments and individuals. Cybercriminals are clever, resourceful and often relentless in their attempts to get access to your personal information and money. In 2016 alone, there were more than 4 billion data records breached worldwide. And that number is only growing as time goes on.

The first cyberattacks started in the 1960s with computers being used to disrupt telephone networks. But when did cybersecurity become a serious issue? The first major attack occurred in 1988 when hackers took down about 10% of all Internet traffic by flooding it with an enormous amount of data through an attack known as a "distributed denial of service" (DDoS).

In 1989, the first virus was created by two computer scientists at Cornell University in New York City called "The Morris Worm." It spread itself through networks using a technique called "spreading," which made use of email addresses found on infected computers' hard drives to send copies of itself to other machines connected to the same network.

The worm eventually caused almost $10 million worth of damage before being stopped after infecting 6,000 computers worldwide.

Identity theft has become a major problem since then.

Cybersecurity has been a serious issue since the beginning of the internet. In fact, cybersecurity was an issue even before the internet was created. The first computer hackers were called "hackers" because they would hack into computers and change things around. In the late 20th century, identity theft became a major problem, and it continues to be one today.

Identity theft is when someone steals your personal information such as your social security number or credit card numbers in order to impersonate you in some way. This can happen either online or offline (in person). Computer viruses have also been around for a long time. Computer viruses are software that can infect a computer by inserting itself into programs on your computer and then replicating itself over and over again until eventually the program crashes or damages your system.

Today we see viruses like ransomware which encrypts all of your files so that you cannot access them unless you pay money for the decryption key!

Hackers can steal people's personal information and use it to do things like take out loans or open credit card accounts in their name to make purchases.

The first time that cybersecurity became a serious issue was when the Internet started to become popular. Before this, the Internet was used by a small number of people and there weren't many security concerns. As more people began using the Internet, it became more important to protect it from hackers who would try to steal information from users or make changes on their computer without their knowledge.

A good example of this is in 2008 when a hacker named Albert Gonzalez stole over 170 million credit card numbers from major retailers like TJ Maxx, OfficeMax and BJ's Wholesale Club. He then used those numbers to buy items online and send the merchandise to other locations where they could be sold at a profit.

In 2013, there were more than 1 billion records exposed by data breaches worldwide according to Symantec Corp., which specializes in Internet security products and services.

In A Word...

It's clear that cybersecurity is a growing concern in the world, and it will become even more important as time goes by. With the growth of the Internet of Things, things like DDoS attacks will become a problem, not just for large companies but for individuals as well. But it's not all bad news—cybersecurity is an exciting field, with plenty of people working on interesting developments to help combat security problems.

The future of cybersecurity appears to be bright, if we can stay on top of it.
