What Are Sedex and SMETA?

Sedex is the name of the organization — SMETA is the name of an audit methodology.

The Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) is a membership-based non-profit that works with buyers and suppliers to develop responsible and ethical business practices in global supply chains.

The audit procedure devised by the Sedex membership, SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit), is a compendium of good practices in ethical audit techniques. Instead of doing separate audits for each customer, a supplier can conduct one audit and share data with many customers using SMETA. The SMETA materials are intended for use by experienced auditors following best practices.

SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) is an ethical audit methodology that encompasses all aspects of responsible business practice. As a multi-stakeholder initiative, SMETA was designed to minimize duplication of effort and provide members and suppliers with an audit format they could easily share. SMETA reports are published in the SEDEX system, ensuring transparency and efficient information sharing.

A SMETA 2-Pillar audit comprises:

  • Labour Standards
  • Health and Safety

A SMETA 4-Pillar audit contains in addition:

  • Environment (extended) — this replaces the Environment (shortened) section detailed above
  • Business Ethics

The Sedex platform

The Sedex platform enables audited sites to bypass lengthy email exchanges and share the final audit report as well as any corrective measures promptly.

The AAC that conducted the audit can also do a desktop review for applicable noncompliance if the audited site requires it.

The Sedex platform is a database that allows merchants and end clients to trace their supply chain and track their compliance programs.

Is Sedex based on a specific code?

Sedex keeps track of ILO Conventions, ETI Base Code, SA 8000, ISO 14001, and industry-specific codes of conduct, as well as other ethical and responsible activities. Members of Sedex can utilize the system’s data to assess suppliers against any of these codes, as well as the labor standards regulations in individual company codes. Sedex does not offer a specific code or indicate if a supplier has ‘passed’ or ‘failed.’

The SMETA Audit Methodology

The ETI Base Code, which is based on the International Labor Organization’s agreements as well as relevant local laws, is used in SMETA audits. Two or four auditing pillars can be used in SMETA audits. Labor Standards and Health & Safety are the two pillars that any SMETA audit must include. Business Ethics and the Environment are the two additional pillars of a 4-pillar audit. They were added to SMETA audits to enhance the social responsibility aspect.
