How Ganesh Broke Kubera's Pride

*

So let's start the story

Once upon a time, Kubera, the god of wealth and king of Lanka, was very proud of his riches. He thought that his vast wealth could satisfy anyone.

One day, he went to Mount Kailash and invited Shiva and Parvati to be his guests. Shiva and Parvati knew that Kubera wanted to show off his wealth. They said, “We have some important work to do; if you like, you can invite our son Ganesh.”

Kubera agreed. He took Ganesh with him to his golden city of Lanka. He showed Ganesh many wonderful objects made of gold.

Ganesh was bored by looking at gold. He was hungry. When a person is hungry, he wants food, not gold! Kubera had a seat arranged for Ganesh. Servants brought food for Ganesh in a plate.

As soon as the servant placed the plate of food in front of Ganesh, Ganesh emptied the plate and said, “What will happen with so little food? I am hungry, bring more food!”

This time, the servant brought a large plate with twice as much food. Ganesh ate it and looked at the servant. The servant brought more food… and then just kept bringing more!

Kubera tried to explain to Ganesh, “Son, eating too much will upset your stomach. You should not eat anymore.” Ganesh retorted, “Is it possible that the god of wealth does not have enough food to feed a child?”

Kubera's pride was hurt, so he said, “Kubera can fill the stomach of the whole world! Eat… I will see how much you can eat!” Ganesh smiled and sat down to eat. Kubera's servants got tired of cooking and serving food, but Ganesh was not satisfied.

Ganesh ate all the food that hundreds of people could eat. As Kubera's food supply began to run out, he felt like there was something black in the dal! He hesitantly asked Ganesh, “My supply is empty. What shall I feed you now?”

Ganesh looked at Kubera's golden throne and said, “There is no food, so what? You have a lot of gold! I have been seeing gold since I came here. Now I will fill my stomach with that.”

Ganesh bit off the foot of Kubera's throne. The throne wobbled and rolled to one side. Kubera folded his hands. But by this time, Ganesh had already bitten off many other things. Kubera's hands and feet turned cold.

He ran to Mount Kailash and begged Shiva and Parvati, “Ganesh has emptied my food supply, but his hunger is not satisfied. Now he is chewing on the precious objects made of gold in the palace. I have understood that you and Ganesh have created this drama to remove my pride. I am ashamed.”

Then Parvati gave Kubera a handful of rice and said, “Ganesh does not like pride. Serve this rice to Ganesh with humility. His hunger will be satisfied.” Kubera returned to Lanka with the rice. By then, Ganesh had eaten a lot of other things.

He immediately cooked the rice and offered it to Ganesh with respect. As soon as Ganesh ate the rice, he belched loudly and stood up. “Ah! Now I am satisfied!” Ganesh said. “My stomach is full, Kubera, now you can take me back to my parents.”

“But… my throne… and my precious objects…” Kubera said hesitantly. “Ha! Ha!” Ganesh laughed. “Don't worry about them. I can't digest food made with pride anyway!” Hearing this, Kubera was humbled.

When Kubera left Ganesh at Mount Kailash, he found all his belongings and his throne safe and sound. And, with it, a lesson!

The main lesson of the story is that

Kubera had a seat arranged for Ganesh. Servants brought food for Ganesh in a plate.

As soon as the servant placed the plate of food in front of Ganesh, Ganesh emptied the plate and said, “What will happen with so little food? I am hungry, bring more food!”

The moral of the story is that

Arrogance is a dangerous thing. It can lead to pride and ultimately to destruction. We should always be humble and grateful for what we have.

In English, there is a saying: “When the intoxication of arrogance rises in the mind, the world seems small. But when the water of humility touches it, the whole world seems to be ours.”

Therefore, in any situation, we should not forget our roots and keep the feeling of humility in our hearts. Only then can we find true happiness and peace.
