Android vs. iOS has been a matter of debate since the dawn of the smartphone era. Both Android and iOS are excellent operating systems, and both offer a number of solid features. We are going to take a closer look at those features in this article. We will discuss some of the key differences in detail and see what makes an Android device stay one step ahead of an iOS device.

1. Affordability

If budget is your key concern, this may be the end of the discussion for you.

Apple has always been out of an average person’s budget. The cheapest Apple phone costs about $500, which is more than the price of a medium Android phone.

On the other hand, Android has been successful in bringing cost-effective devices into the market. Nothing competes with Android for the sheer range and variety that it offers.

While you can spend a lot if you want- Samsung’s new Z series costs around $1400 - you also have a wide selection of efficient and cost-effective devices to choose from –for prices as low as $200.

2. More hardware diversity

With iOS, you don’t have much choice. It is designed for Apple devices alone; thus, Apple’s choices are your only choices.

But in Android, you have the freedom of choice. Android is not designed for a particular brand or a hardware set. It works on literally every device. Devices with entirely different hardware specs can run on Android and work efficiently.

Android makes it easier for you to choose a device according to your budget and personal requirements. Whether you want a bigger screen, or a stylus, or an excellent battery life, or personalized choices – Android has you covered.

3. Ease of side-loading apps

In Apple, you can only install apps through the App Store. Being a closed source operating system, iOS doesn’t allow you to install applications from third parties. So even if an iOS app development company releases a new app on their website, you can’t install in on your iOS device unless it is published in the App Store.

Android, being an open-source operating system, doesn’t have this problem. While Play Store will be your primary source for new apps, you can access alternative app stores. This enables you to download and install apps from third-party apps with just a simple change in the settings. This is a boon for any Android app development company that releases independent apps.

4. Better storage services

You cannot expand the internal storage of iOS devices. To neutralize this, Apple offers iCloud storage, but you only get 5GB, and it works with only iOS, Mac, and Windows.

Android devices allow you to expand the internal storage by using SD cards. You can also use Google Drive to store everything from photos to documents. You get 15 GB of cloud storage for free, and it provides cross-platform support as well. So you can use Google Drive on iOS, whereas iCloud cannot be accessed on Android.

Thus, Android’s cloud storage is easier to use and more effective than that of iOS.

5. Longer battery life

Battery life is a major concern for iOS users. The battery tends to drain out very fast. A customer does not get any option to choose between various battery types during purchase.

For Android, due to the wide variety of models available, you can choose a device or a brand that offers longer battery life.

Though iOS offers a power-saving mode to extend battery life and performance, it is not as customizable as Android’s power-saving mode. Most Android models released from 2019 support fast charging. In 2020, Apple released iPhones that support fast charging and wireless charging. But there again you have to buy the fast-charging adapter separately, while it is provided in the box with an Android phone.

Both Android and iOS are mature, feature-packed platforms that have their own unique characteristics. However, the features such as better customization support, increased storage and battery life, more hardware diversity, and sheer affordability make Android a better choice when compared to iOS.
