The Problem of Broken Electronics at the Thrift Store
Today, I was sitting on the couch pondering making coffee, and it occurred to me that my second-hand Keurig machine has been a great investment. Over the four months or so that I’ve had it, my boyfriend and I have probably made more over 200 coffees with it. The Keurig is sleek and pretty, and looked to be like-new when I bought it. One of the fancier models, it retailed for a couple hundred dollars or so.

The useful life of the technology is short. If you take two years off a device these days, that's a lot, especially when you consider that many of us replace our phones with the latest and greatest model every 18 months.

I am not a nerd, not a turd, not third, just looking at a word here. I needed help and have signed up for a couple sessions with a tech person and still don’t feel like I am there. All is not at a loss, just maybe an app that cost, and I’m feeling lost, I just tossed, my hat in the ring, I’m teaching a class I sing. Well, not sing, just Native American culture class is what I bring.

Technology is changing at a very fast pace in today’s world and it has become important that we keep ourselves updated with the same. People have started treating mobile phones as a use-and-throw version of plastic, where if a new updated model arrives, one will simply buy the same and throw the old outdated one.
Sejal MehtaPublished 3 years ago in 01How was Life Before TV and Other Digital Products?
Smartphones converged the functions of several tools, including radio and television. However, I think that the technology is too new to make a fair judgement on whether it has impacted society more than radio or television. One might even say that it is still debatable whether radio or television had the greater long-term impact on society. People on the radio camp would say that most of the types of entertainment now associated with television, such as sports, live concert performances, dramas, soap operas, and game shows, were originally broadcast on the radio. They might even cite that broadcast coverage of World War II was almost exclusively via radio (television broadcasting had started in a few countries before the war, but most stations were off the air during the war). People on the television camp might say that television brought about an increased awareness in the way that things look and that it created a new platform for old material that originally had been developed for movie theatres (this would include things such as old films, Three Stooges shorts, and Tom & Jerry cartoons.

That was the question. “Gram, what’s different now from when you were a kid?” asked the ten year old grandson. Thinking back, I remember asking my dad and my grandfather the same question. It seems inconceivable that things haven’t always been as they are now.

I think the people of my generation, Generation X, should have their brains and experiences preserved cause when you think about it, we are like living relics. We are the living breathing bridge between the mechanical age and the digital age. The soon to be missing links if you will.

Ada Lovelace, The First Computer Programmer
When do you think the first computer came around? Thinking the 80s? 60s? 40s? What if I told you that a computer had been designed back in 1837, and that the first person who programmed for this device was the daughter of one of the world's most famous poets?
