In a recent post titled Apple’s AR/VR Headset May Be Coming Soon, I spoke about Apple potentially hopping onto the VR bandwagon soon with a mixed reality headset.

In this post, I’ll be speaking about some recent news that indicates a mixed reality headset by Samsung, presumably to rival Apple’s headset.

About Samsung’s Headset

Recently, there has been speculation about Samsung’s involvement in the virtual reality (VR) market.

Many have questioned if the company has missed the VR bus, as other players such as the PSVR 2, Meta Quest Pro, VIVE XR Elite, and Apple’s AR/VR headset have taken the lead. However, it seems that Samsung is eager to get back in the game, as they have officially confirmed their plans for a new mixed-reality headset.

The announcement was made at Samsung Unpacked event last week, where the company revealed that they are working with Google and Qualcomm on the new XR wearable headset.

Although the device's specifics have not yet been revealed, Samsung has stated they are collaborating with Meta and Microsoft on the project. There is speculation that the mixed-reality headset will be designed to rival Apple’s upcoming device, but no details have been confirmed.

Samsung has indicated that they want to wait for the platform and software to be “somewhat ready” before launching their mixed-reality headset.

This approach is similar to Apple’s strategy, where they often wait for others to make mistakes and then enter the market has learned from those experiences. This approach may give Samsung an advantage in the crowded VR market.

At this point, it appears that the device is still in the prototype stage. A Samsung battery with the product code I120 was spotted by a Netherlands tech site, which ties in with the headset’s reported model number SM-I120.

The battery is 45 x 45mm, which suggests that it will be installed inside the headset rather than in a separate battery pack, similar to the design of the Apple AR/VR headset.

The VR market is set to be an exciting space in the coming year, with many players vying for a piece of the pie. Sony has reportedly reduced its sales expectations for PSVR 2 due to disappointing pre-orders, believed to be due to its high price point compared to the PS5.

Meanwhile, Apple’s AR/VR headset is expected to carry a premium price tag, making the PSVR 2 seem relatively inexpensive. Despite the recent advancements in VR technology, there has yet to be a breakthrough app that genuinely sets it apart from the rest.

Final Words

It remains to be seen if this will be the year VR headlines finally come true. Only time will tell if Samsung’s mixed reality headset will be the game changer that the VR market is waiting for.
