On the Cusp of the Artificial Intelligence Revolution - Preface

Exciting times are in the offing.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is life-changing technology. Countless solutions are developed globally. AI solutions, covering emerging technology stacks such as robotics, big data analytics, machine learning, neural networks, IоT (Internet of Things) dеvісе іntеgrаtіоn, and Cloud Computing from hosting perspective, have elevated mасhіnе thinking and machine labor tо a nеw level.

These remarkable integration approaches allowed intelligent rоbоtѕ tо outsmart humаnѕ іn terms of соgnіtіvе capabilities. As a result, a new discipline, cognitive computing, has started to emerge. Cognitive applications can observe, lеаrn, аdарt, аnd perform tedious tasks соnѕіdеrаblу quicker thаn humаnѕ.

AI is a special topic to me. I dedicated four decades of my life to studying and working in this fascinating field. I still enjoy contributing to the body of knowledge and breakthrough solutions in the industry.

I thought it is time to share my knowledge with the public and took the plunge to write a simple book that anyone can understand and gain insights into. There are hundreds of books about this topic. So what is the point of writing another book?

My purpose is to introduce the remarkable benefits of AI and create a new view of AI by looking at it from a fresh perspective. I want to reflect on insights from behind the doors of AI solutions. I invite my audience to become friends with AI services and offerings by informing them of critical knowledge.

This book aims to introduce the key points and reflect on the true nature of AI. I suggest seeing AI as a new tool to extend and enhance our capabilities. Not as a replacement of human intelligence and virtues.

Covering a broad scope, I touch on many aspects, including individuals and professions like business people, educators, learners, healthcare professionals, and overall society.

I particularly add the disciplines of business, education, and health to the equation because the way we do business and how we learn will dramatically change. Likewise, the way we heal might change too.

AI currently has and will have a significant impact on our business and economies. However, even though AI has made substantial progress, we are still at the nascent stage. Therefore, we need more breakthrough innovations and inventions.

The more significant part of the iceberg is dealing with ethical concerns, personal anxiety, and societal fear. If we fear AI, our resistance may delay the benefits that we may get from it.

Every technological and scientific breakthrough presents new ethical, philosophical, cultural, and other societal implications. Indeed, many ethical problems require resolutions, but they shouldn't discourage us. On the contrary, with common sense and collaborative effort, we can overcome them.

I created each chapter with a specific topic covering essential aspects of AI components within that context. Without delving into too many technical details, I choose to give a high-level understanding of crucial concepts and essential components of AI systems in daily language so that anyone without a technical background can grasp the ideas.

My goal is to inform the audience based on my experience. Knowledge and understanding can remove anxiety and fear. I look at AI from an optimistic angle because I firmly believe that it can bring many benefits to humanity if it is appropriately designed and integrated for human needs.

I particularly cover critical points such as public safety and security, which come first. We need to revisit the term autonomous as it scares the public. Autonomous does not mean conscious. Humans can give autonomy with specific boundaries.

However, there is a substantial role for law and regulations. Therefore, we cannot develop AI systems in isolation. Public and responsible authorities need to work hand in hand with developers of solutions. Thus, societal collaboration is essential. To this end, open-source plays a crucial role. Open communities with collaboration can take AI to publicly desired levels.

AI is a global phenomenon. It is not just one nation's work anymore. It can affect every human being. Therefore, all AI systems must be universal and aim to enhance the capabilities of all human beings with synergy. Thus, standardization, automation, and transparency are critical premises of AI.

This is the first version of the book. Therefore, I need your feedback to improve it and make it more useful to my audience.
