Economic Operation of Software Industry from January to February in 2022

From January to February, China's software and information technology service industry (hereinafter referred to as "software industry") ran steadily, with double-digit growth in software business income, a marked drop in profit growth and a steady increase in software business exports.

Overall operation

Revenue from the software business maintained double-digit growth. From January to February, China's software business revenue was 1.1792 trillion yuan, an increase of 11.6% over the same period last year. The growth rate was 6.1 points lower than that of the whole of 2021 and 8 percentage points higher than the two-year average growth rate of the same period in 2020 and 2021.

Profit growth has slowed down significantly. From January to February, the profits of the software industry totaled 133.2 billion yuan, down 7.6 percent from the same period last year, a growth rate of 15.2 points lower than that of 2021 and 11.8 percentage points lower than the two-year average growth rate of the same period in 2020 and 2021.

The export of software business increased steadily. From January to February, software business exports totaled US $7.75 billion, up 7.1 percent from the same period last year, down 1.7 points from the whole of 2021 and 11.3 percent higher than the two-year average growth rate for the same period in 2020 and 2021. Among them, exports of outsourced services achieved rapid growth, an increase of 25.7% over the same period last year.

Operation in different areas

Revenue growth from software products is slowing. From January to February, the revenue of software products was 271.4 billion yuan, an increase of 9.0% over the same period last year, which was 3.3% lower than that of 2021, accounting for 23.0% of the industry's income. Of this total, revenue from industrial software products totaled 31.6 billion yuan, up 10.7 percent from the same period last year, while revenue from basic software increased by 10.6 percent over the same period last year.

The share of income from information technology services has increased steadily. From January to February, information technology service revenue totaled 770.3 billion yuan, an increase of 13.1 percent over the same period last year, accounting for 65.3 percent of the industry's income, an increase of 0.9 percent over the same period last year. Of this total, revenue from cloud computing and big data services totaled 132.5 billion yuan, up 11.3 percent from the same period last year, accounting for 17.2 percent of the revenue from information technology services; 32.5 billion yuan from integrated circuit design, up 12.5 percent from the same period last year; and technical services from e-commerce platforms totaling 126.1 billion yuan, up 24.8 percent from the same period last year.

Revenue from information security products and services grew steadily. From January to February, revenue from information security products and services totaled 25.7 billion yuan, an increase of 11.4 percent over the same period last year, and the growth rate was 1.6 percentage points lower than that of 2021.

The growth rate of embedded system software revenue has decreased significantly. From January to February, the revenue of embedded system software was 111.8 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8 percent over the same period last year, and the growth rate was 11.2 percent lower than that of the whole of 2021.

Operation by region

The growth rate of software industry income in the eastern region has slowed down, while the western region has taken the lead in growth. From January to February, the software business income of the eastern region was 982.9 billion yuan, an increase of 10.8% over the same period last year, which was 6.8% lower than that of the whole of 2021; the software business income of the central region was 40.7 billion yuan, an increase of 9.7% over the same period last year, and the growth rate was 9.2% lower than that of 2021; and the software business income of the western region was 134.7 billion yuan, an increase of 19.3% over the same period last year, which was 7.7% higher than the national average. The revenue from software business in Northeast China totaled 20.8 billion yuan, an increase of 6.8 percent over the same period last year, and the growth rate was 5.3 percentage points lower than that of the whole of 2021. The software business income of the four regions accounted for 83.4%, 3.5%, 11.4% and 1.8% of the total national income, respectively.

The major software provinces are developing steadily. From January to February, among the top five provinces with software business revenue, the software business income of Beijing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang was 259.6 billion yuan, 195.8 billion yuan, 172.4 billion yuan, 109.8 billion yuan and 105.4 billion yuan respectively, an increase of 10.7%, 6.7%, 10.5%, 17.4% and 7.0% respectively. Compared with the same period last year, it fell by 1 percentage point.

The growth of software business income in the central city has slowed down, and the total profit has shown negative growth. From January to February, the software business income of 15 vice-provincial central cities across the country reached 584.7 billion yuan, an increase of 9.0% over the same period last year, which was 7.3 percentage points lower than that of 2021, accounting for 49.6% of the national software business income. Among them, the growth rate of software business income in Ningbo, Jinan, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Qingdao, Chengdu and Dalian exceeded the industry average. The total profit realized was 75.4 billion yuan, down 13.2% from the same period last year.
