Technology giants like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Quora are now household names. How did they get started? What was their initial vision? And why did these companies become successful?

The Internet has transformed our lives. From connecting us to information to sharing photos and videos, the web has changed the way we live. Nowadays, almost every person uses some form of social media. In fact, according to Statista, over 2.5 billion people use the Internet worldwide.

To answer these questions, let’s take a look at the history of each company.

1. Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg wanted to create a social network that would allow people to share information. He created this idea while he was at Harvard University.

In 2004, Zuckerberg started building Facebook.com. He had no money, so he used his dorm room as an office.

When Facebook went live, it only allowed Harvard students to join.

After graduating from college, Zuckerberg moved to Palo Alto, California.

By 2006, Facebook had 100 million users.

In 2007, Facebook changed its privacy settings. This caused many people to leave the site.

2. Twitter

Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass in March 2006. They were students at O'Reilly's Camp (now known as Burning Man) who wanted to build a better way to communicate through text messaging. In 2007 they launched their website and mobile app.

3. Quora

In 2009, two Stanford students, David Filo and Jerry Yang, were looking for a way to connect their friends. They came across a website called StackOverflow that allowed users to ask questions about programming. This site had been around since 2008 but was not well known at the time. So they decided to create a similar site for entrepreneurs.

In 2010, the company officially launched and named it Quora.

The founders wanted to make sure that Quora would be different from other sites. They did this by making it easy to find answers to any question.

Users could post questions anonymously, and anyone could answer them.

Questions were organized into topics, allowing people to easily search through the site.

Quora was free to use, and the founders offered no incentives to attract users.

4. Pinterest

In 2006, Evan Sharp and Ben Silbermann were working at Facebook, where they had been hired to build a product that would help people find interesting content on the site. They came across a problem that no one else seemed to have noticed yet: People were spending too much time looking at pictures instead of reading articles.

So they built a prototype called Pinboard, which let users create collections of links to web pages, images, videos, etc., and then share them with their friends.

When they launched the service, they didn't expect it to take off like it did. Within six months, Pinboard had over 100,000 registered users.

But the founders weren't satisfied with just building a website. They wanted to make something bigger than that. So they started thinking about how to expand beyond what they had created.

One day, Sharp and Silbermann sat down together and realized that they could use the same technology to create a social network for sharing ideas. And that's exactly what they did.

On January 4th, 2009, Pinterest officially launched.

5. Reddit

Steve Huffman created Reddit while he was attending college at the University of Virginia. He originally wanted to start a website called "The Obvious," but his roommate convinced him that the idea would never work. Instead, they decided to create something that would allow people to share their opinions and ideas online. They came up with the name “Reddit” after reading about a community in South Korea where people posted messages on paper slips hung around their necks.
