How to install the Discord App? And its benefits

Discord aims to be a modern voice and text chat application

Discord was launched on May 13 2015 with the intention of building a communication platform for gamers. Through its intuitive interface, users can easily connect with other gamers using a variety of different media, both text and audio. Within seconds of opening the application you are presented with an option to create a server or join an existing one, with invitations available through direct messages or voice chat invitations on-screen.

Discord aims to be a modern voice and text chat application, designed for gamers but… not limited to gamers – Discord's general-purpose enough that anyone can use it no matter what they're into. You can share your favourite music or movies or what-have-you with your friends or chat about whatever's on your mind.

Discord is an all-in-one voice and text chat for everyone that's free, secure, and works on both your desktop and phone.

You might be familiar with the team messaging app Slack. The problem with Slack is, it's not free. I mean, you can use it for free, in a limited capacity, but then you have to pay to use more of it. Which seems excessive. So we moved all of our work stuff to Discord, and we are loving it so far.

We personally moved all our work to Discord from Slack. We didn't want to have to pay for yet another app. We run an entire free code school program on Discord, of course with the help of Telegram (For onboarding) and Airtable (for assignment automation).

Discord lets you communicate with people in a more fun way. Instead of just typing out messages, you can now use your voice to talk to them – and even share your screen so they can see what you're doing. Plus, with Discord's new video call feature, you can have face-to-face conversations with your friends or colleagues no matter where they are.

Codewit Code School is on Discord but you have to join our Telegram community and then you join our Amazing Discord community.

There are several ways to access the Discord app. You can access it directly on a Web Browser like Chrome, Firefox or Brave, or download it to your PC/Mac

Step 1:

Click on Download for Mac, it should show Download for Windows if you use a PC, or you can simply just open it on your web browser.

Step 2:

The installer named "DiscordSetup.exe" for windows and "DiscordSetup.dmg" for Mac will appear in your downloads bar. Click on the file to open it.

Step 3:

If prompted to download the app, click on agree and then select 'Run' from the bottom of the list of options. Go through all instructions on every step and you will be fine.

In the search bar for Windows or Launchpad for Mac , type "Discord" and then click on the Discord icon when it appears.

What our Discord Onboarding message looks like:

Set up: Discord

Download for Windows or Macbook or you can go to Playstore for Android users and App Store for iPhone users to download. Search for “Discord”

Why do we need Discord?

Telegram is how we get you into the door. Discord is where all the fun is going to be. You have access to specialised rooms in this discord channel. So you don’t get confused in a crowded room, we have divided things into categories. We have a room where you can do general introductions, a room where we share tools and resources, a room if you need support from the team, and then specialised rooms for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python. We keep adding rooms when we see the need to. We can even jump on an audio call on Discord if we need to.  Might be difficult to get used to, but really fun when you get a hang of it.

What can you do with Discord in Summary?

  • Discord can be used to connect with existing and new communities. Regardless of the number of members in a discord community, the platform encourages ongoing learning and conversations between users.
  • You can run an entire course platform on Discord. Assigments, Tutorials, Reviews, Pitches and more. I know a University in France using Discord for practically all of their online learning management.
  • You can use Discord to Learn how to code. So many online coding communities on Discord.
  • A group hosted a clubhouse room and moved everyone to discord to successfully run a community hackathon.
