If you want to conserve the battery, there are many ways to increase the battery life of your Windows laptops. Dark themes can cause you to boost the brightness of your laptops to read text and to see buttons and interfaces with higher brightness, thereby drawing more power from the battery. If you're wondering how dark mode saves your phone's battery life, the answer is a little more complicated.

The complicated answer is that dark mode saves a considerable amount of battery life if you have a phone with an OLED screen. For example, with a MacBook, it does not save battery when it uses an LCD screen. Those with LCD screens will no difference when using the dark mode, while those with OLED screens will experience a significant increase in battery life when using the dark mode.

PhoneBuff in a dark mode test found that the dark mode of the iPhone XS Max consumed between 5% and 30% less battery life than the light mode, depending on screen brightness. The dark mode turns down the brightness of the display, which can affect the longer battery life of LCD devices. The dark-mode tests were conducted with special apps over several hours, so individual results can vary, as most people will not be watching the same app for hours.

It is obvious that less light would consume less power, but that is not how displays on many of our devices work. If your device uses an LCD display, it uses a backlight that differs from the point of view of power consumption.

This turns the displays into black pixels, not light. The hardware explanation for the sudden rise in dark interfaces is that the newer OLED screens are lighter than traditional LCD screens. If your phone has an OLED display that can be turned on and off in dark mode without turning on a few lights in your home, the net power increase adds up over time.

Due to the high contrast of your favorite movies, the ink-black surface and the battery saving, you can use dark themes on your laptop or mobile phone. Your Android phone decorated with a dark theme won't look like that, but it will help save battery life. If your laptop does not use an OLED display, you will not get the benefits of battery saving, but you will find that dark issues can affect your battery life (at least theoretically).

At the Android Dev Summit 2018, Google discussed how color choice in Android applications affects battery life. The dark mode helps to relieve the battery of devices with OLED screens.

The reasoning is that when pixels on an LCD screen are turned off, the power required to display both bright and dark pixel shades is significantly longer. This is because OLED lights up by switching pixels on and off, whereas LCD screens do not. Longer term, individual pixels work less in the darker areas of the screen, and they are used to spice up the display for true black.

Ryan Whitwam conducted his own dark mode test for Greenbot in 2014 and observed a 41 per cent drop in battery life when reading Reddit in dark mode. More recently, Google engineers calculated a 63 percent decline in screen performance when using the pixels on the phone, as shown in this screenshot of Google Maps in normal or dark mode.

A YouTuber called PhoneBuff showed how much battery the iPhone 12s "OLED screen has saved compared to the iPhone 11s" LCD screen in dark mode. It looks like these results were released after PhoneBuff conducted battery life tests in dark mode on YouTube.

In the experiment shared on YouTube, PhoneBuff used a robot arm to interact with two fully charged iPhones with iOS 13, one in dark mode and the other in bright mode. As the robotic arm made its way through various native and third-party apps that support display mode, the two iPhones died.

On Samsung phones, you can identify power-guzzling apps by selecting Settings > Battery > Device Maintenance > Background Restrictions and selecting which apps you want to euthanize.

If you always keep your screen at full brightness, your battery may be empty, so it's a good idea to turn down the brightness of your screen so you can use your phone more efficiently while saving your battery. Most phones are in power-saving or power-saving mode by default when your phone is enabled, but if your phone's battery drops below 20%, you can activate it to save battery life. Your device automatically adjusts the brightness of your screen depending on your use and the amount of light available, but you can override this feature in your phone's settings.

Open your phone settings app and tap Display > Advanced > Screen Attention to turn on screen Attention. To decrease the screen brightness, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen. Open the app for your phone's settings, tap Turn off, and turn on the app for your phone's settings (Pixel 4).

Both Apple and Android support Dark Mode in their operating systems and many developers include it in their apps. Social media apps like Twitter, Facebook Messenger and many Google apps as well as most read-only apps like Reddit, Pocket and Kindle have all a dark mode. The easiest way to enable the OLED-friendly dark mode is to search for long periods in the settings of the application you are using.

Windows does not offer scheduling capabilities, but an open source application called Auto-Dark Mode in Windows 10 does the job for you at the time of writing. By setting it up, you can use daytime light mode and dark mode at night, which is the best of both worlds. Android does not currently provide scheduling, but there is a free third-party app called Automatic Dark Theme which automatically switches between dark and light mode.

Answering these questions is crucial to help app designers make informed design decisions and justify development efforts to implement dark fashion. It must be said that research suggests that dark mode does not lead to a productivity boost for most people, but can make you more productive.
