Understanding Computer Security

Everyone is a target for hackers. They want personal information to sell. Even the groups claiming to be good are committing crimes and ruining lives. A person needs to know what to do to protect themselves, even on their personal computer. A George Washington University cyber security degree would be a great way to better understand how to securely protect your information. It just takes a few simple tips and a person can be less worried. Caution, planning, and taking care of little issues will solve most of the biggest issues. By doing so, a person will not have to be paranoid about their next web surfing adventure.

Update Mania

People forget to update. They think that it is all done automatically, but they need to check for themselves, especially on any program that helps surf the web or offers protections. Malware detection and antivirus are two that frequently have updates that people need to be sure of. The firewall is what most believe is all they need, but these two types of software are key programs to have. Plan to check at least once a month for updates. Learning how to get these updates will also help a person learn the programs that they use. Updates are an essential step to security.

Information Security

There are always emails that come that say some website you use is having issues. Check the email address of the sender, first. If the person does not have an email associated with the company, then they are not part of it. The next step is to realize that companies will not ask for the information they already have. These are phishing scams and are as common as breathing. A person needs to know not to answer them, as personal information is valuable to these criminals. If a person has questions, do not answer the email. Go to the website and find their contact information and ask that way.

Password Jumble

Passwords can be annoying, especially if there is a constant need to change them. That does not mean that it is not important. A password should be difficult to guess and always odd. While writing them down is not good, make sure it is in a secure location if it has to be. Change them if there is the least bit of concern. Most passwords are broken with software programs, so the longer the better. A password is valuable, as a person always seem to use the same for every log in.

Share Overload

Most everyone is on some form of social media. People do not seem to realize that sharing too much in life can lead to people finding ways to use that information. People make mistakes in letting people learn where they live. People have to work. People go on vacation. The house is empty. It happens all too much. People share so much information, passwords are easy to guess. Identities can be stolen from this information. That is why people need to not share as much, or at least watch what is shared.

There are several ways that people can make their time online safer. It requires some knowledge that is put into practice. There are more tips, but these will help the most with making a person's life more secure online and in real life. A person just needs to make sure their computer is ready. Practice correct security ways with a password and social media. These may seem to take time away from the fun, but they will make sure the fun can remain just that. Remember that criminals, just like the ones that walk around neighborhoods, want to find little chinks in the armor and exploit them.
