4 Tips to Optimize Network Performance

How to use technology to its potential

Here are several tips that you can use to optimize your network performance.

Connection

The first tip is to make sure that you start with a high speed Internet connection. This is especially true if you have a family who plays a lot of games or watches a lot of movies online. There are a few tools that you can use in order to find out how fast the connection that you already have is. If you are watching basic videos online, then you will need at least 3Mbps or higher. Then, if you will be using the HD quality video, then you will need to have 5Mbps to 10Mbps. Therefore, you will need to compare this to the connection that you already have so that you will know what your Internet provider will give you. This will let you know if you just need to upgrade your package or if you need to go with another Internet company. Sometimes, your current Internet company might not be able to provide you with the Internet speed that you need to keep up with your family's busy schedule.

Router

The second tip is to upgrade your router. This is especially true if you have an older router. This is because an older router will not be able to handle a large number of devices that might be trying to connect or if you have recently started to stream a lot of music, games, or movies. Therefore, if you know that your router is between three to five years old, then you will need to upgrade it. If your router is not that old, but you are always having to reboot your router because whatever you are trying to do online is buffering, then it is time to upgrade. A new router will be able to handle all of the things that you want to do on the Internet. You want to make sure that it is a wireless router, so all of your devices can be connected to it. You will need to think about the fact that the network is not the only thing that will affect the speed of the router. You will also want it to have a faster processor because it will take less time processing the information inside of it.

Security

The third tip is to use the security best practices for network settings. Most of the time, the more modern wireless routers are going to come up with a random network name and password that is already set up for you. If you decide that you want to change these things, then you will need to remember that the name that you choose will be visible to other people. Therefore, it is a good idea to make sure that the network name does not have any private information about you. For example, you don't want a name like the Perry's Family Network. It is usually a good idea to come up with a password that is very complex, so that there is less of a chance of someone guessing what the password is. A good way to do this is to have a long password that has a mixture of upper and lower case letters with a combination of numbers and punctuation marks. You definitely want to stay away from using easy to guess passwords to maximize your security.

Up to date

The fourth tip is to make sure that all of the devices that you will be using to connect to the Internet are up to date. The first step in this is to check for software updates on your operating systems. Most of the time, this is going to happen automatically, but it is always a good idea to check, especially if you are always having issues with your network. The second step is to check to make sure that network drivers from the maker of the computer are also updated. This is very important after you have done an update on your operating system. When the firmware is updated, it can help to improve the performance and security of your network. The third step is to make sure that anything that you will be using to connect to the Internet has been updated at all times when you are having a lot of problems with your network.
