Why Write?

Why write? Some people will tell you it is because you have something to say. That might be true but not every story has to political or have some glaring message. Some of us write strictly for entertainment purposes. Don't underestimate the power of purely just entertaining people. That can be more uniting than some glaring message because the trouble with most messages, particularly political ones are they only apply to certain people. Case in point, my favorite movie is Halloween.

The director and most of its cast are democrats and I am a republican. The Thing is directed by Carpenter andKurt Russel is a conservative and modern political activists online would act like I would have to hate Halloween and love The Thing because of my politics if both films came out today.

I don't like The Thing. It is boring. I love Halloween and there lies the point. Your writing can connect people with you regardless of politics. Now political messaging will not automatically alienate your writing if you remember some advice my creative writing professor Chris Bayes told me. If you write something political, show the other side equally.

This advice gets largely ignored today, and it is a shame. Look at Storm of the Century. They talk about Abortion and the girl got one and the dad was angry. Now she killed the dad and he had cheated on her and so she aborted it. Now one could see the scene as making a message in possible support of abortion since we are meant to sympathize with the girl but the fact that the killer mocks her for it conservatives could also interpet that guilt and taunting as a conservative message ina nd of itself.

You want your audience to feel the author believes this. You do not want them to think you think they're stupid if they disagree with you. Now, you can ignore my advice or double or triple down on fighting it. I am not the authority. You as an author have full control over what content you write. These pieces you write are a part of you. Youa re the creator and you get to decide whether or not you want to include whatever message you want.

Also, do not be afraid of backlash at what you write. You want to make people feel and react. It comes with the territory. You have to develop a thick skin, more advice my professor gave me. When I write i like to explore things. What if my family were Lions fans instead of Browns fans. What if I could have this profession? So forth.

Things make more sense when I write. I may hear people say lecture me about some message but until I see an imagined scenario or create one and see how this theory affects people in an imaginary setting, then it validates it more for me then just hearing a preaching message in a comercial or something.

Creating my own universe is really fun. The feeling of creating my own world and people is a really cool and fun thing. I like to imagine myself winning some award or pursuing the goal of being able to support myself from my writing. I love writing short pieces so I can create more pieces very quickly.

I do alternate between short films and stories to novels and feature length screenplays. I am currently working on a feature length screenpaly I plan on posting on Script Revolution. If you want to write write to please yourself first and you will find your audience. Thank you.
