Being a writer is one of those dream jobs that people dream of having and fantasizing about. Like being an astronaut or a paleontologist.

They dream of writing a novel, even if its just once in their lifetime. A dream job that allows one to share their creativity with the rest of the world. They dream of a wild fantasy where the pen keeps moving and creativity flows non stop.

Why do some people, mainly those who have never really written anything in the form of creative writing, think us writers are like some kind of magician?

That we have a constant stream of ideas. That we can write absolutely anything, churning out ideas like some kind of machine. Just give us a command and we can fulfill it.

People might see a book with a stunning cover on display at a bookstore. They might pick up that book and read it. Some might be impressed and want to read more books from that author.

But many might not realize the hard work put into making that book a reality. They don’t see the rewrites and the edits. The times when the author hit a dead end and wanted to give up. The rejections.

Only 3% of people who start writing a book actually finish it.

They only see the end result. That book with the stunning cover in the bookstore.

Yes! The whole process of writing a story whether it’s a short story or a full length novel is also an amazing and fulfilling process! When the pieces of the story start connecting together. When you thought you were only going to write 500 words but the flow was great and you ended up writing 1,000.

But at the same time, anyone who has even attempted writing a novel knows it can be quite a challenging process and it is not always easy!

In a way, us writers are sort of like magicians! We have the power to give others a glimpse inside our imagination through words. We can make even the most mundane experience sound so poetic! We have the magic of words.

Our stories just don’t happen like magic!
