What I Can’t Say
A piece of an old poem, with a new direction, and reimagined as a song
Verse 1:
Whispers in a megaphone,
senseless static, void of tone
So much to say, but where did the words go?
You’re so good at listening,
but you haven’t heard the mystery
It’s not your fault, darling, the words are all so crippling
Pre-Chorus:
I don’t know what to say or where to start,
I’m not nervous, I’m just controlled by unknown parts
Chorus:
If I can’t speak what needs to be said
If I get angry or wish myself dead
Would you hear me?
Would you know?
I’ll never say just how I feel
When I’m feeling things too real
So can you hear me?
Do you know?
And I’m not sure of the truth today
But can you hear what I can’t say?
Verse 2:
There’s a room behind my eyes
where every sentence goes to die,
and I keep finding bones where I buried explanations.
I rehearse a softer tone,
then the whole thing turns to stone,
and I mistake your open hands for accusations.
I know you’re not the enemy.
I know you’re not the war.
But something in my nervous system
keeps on guarding every door.
Pre-Chorus 2:
I don’t mean to make you bleed from all my broken glass,
I’m just trying to hold the present while I’m choking on the past.
Chorus:
If I can’t speak what needs to be said
If I get angry or wish myself dead
Would you hear me?
Would you know?
I’ll never say just how I feel
When I’m feeling things too real
So can you hear me?
Do you know?
I’m not locked up inside, I swear
My mind’s just playing truth or dare
And I’m not sure what truth is today
But can you hear what I can’t say?
Bridge:
I don’t need you to fix it.
I don’t need you to leave.
I don’t need another lecture
on how easy it should be.
Just listen,
To what I can’t say
[instrumental]
Outro:
I am trying.
I am trying.
I am trying
Can you hear me?
