The Weight of What Can't Be Said

It was a rainy afternoon when I saw a girl, drenched and crying—her tears blending with the rain. Something about her sorrow felt familiar.

I approached and invited her to sit under a nearby shed. There, she opened up and told me a long story.

Behind the Facade

She was a girl from a small village who grew up in the city. The youngest of ten siblings, she often found herself alone despite the size of her family.

They weren’t rich, yet she never lacked the things she wanted—at least, materially.

Everyone saw her as blessed, strong, smart, and happy. But she grew up feeling incapable and incomplete.

The Unseen Battle

As each day passed by, the weight of the day seemed heavier, pressing down on her chest. She’d gulp down air as if it would help her breathe easier, but it never did. The ache in her stomach was constant—an unspoken reminder of everything she had to carry alone, because everyone expected her to be strong and unbreakable.

She knew she was loved, but there was an unexplainable emptiness growing inside her. She tried to ignore it, but it eventually overcrowded her heart. She said, “If only they knew—if only they knew how I really was inside.”

She then told me a heartbreaking story—one that left her feeling worthless and devastated. She struggled to put it into words. Her voice trembled, and her eyes looked lost in a pain too heavy to share. I won’t recount that part. It was too painful, even to write.

A Drenched Heart

Still sobbing, she then shared another wound—someone she trusted deeply, someone she once imagined a future with, chose a different path and left her behind. That someone left a hollow in her chest, one that echoed in quiet moments. But she never let the sorrow breach the surface.

Her laughter came easily, her smile even easier, like a mask she’d worn for years. To others, she seemed unshaken—resilient. But inside, she was breaking. “If only they knew what was behind my smiles and laughter,” she said.

As I listened to her pain, there was something unsettlingly familiar about her words. The way she spoke of emptiness, of longing for something she could never have—there was a quiet echo in her voice that seemed to stir something deep within me.

I couldn’t quite place it, but it felt like I was hearing my own unspoken fears reflected back at me, as if I, too, had once stood in her shoes.

A Glimmer of Light Lost

As time passed, she slowly began to heal. She met someone—a gentle soul who saw through her silence, someone who loved and cared for her in ways she hadn’t known she needed.

This someone became her refuge: a best friend, a sister, a family—something words often fail to capture. For the first time in a long while, she felt whole, as if some fragile gap within her had quietly closed.

But life, in its cruel rhythm, took that comfort away. The someone who once held her together drifted into sleep and never woke up.

Years had passed since then, but the ache remained. Happiness had become like chasing shadows—possible, but always slipping away.

She had come to understand that joy must rise from within, but there was always a quiet tug, an emptiness that refused to be named.

The Ache of Absence

She smiled bitterly and asked, “Have you ever longed for something so simple, so ordinary to others, but to you… it feels like the one thing that could save you?”

She didn’t wait for an answer. Her eyes were already glassy. “I used to think that if I could just have a taste of it,” she whispered, “even a moment, it would be enough,” she added.

Her voice trembled as she continued, “I’ve watched people have it so easily, like air, while I... I would’ve begged for it if I could.”

There was a silence between us that carried the weight of her longing. I didn’t ask what she meant.

Somehow, I already knew.

The Unraveling

“Tomorrow is another day,” I whispered.

She looked at me, eyes brimming with tears—her expression carved from sorrow.

If only I had the power to make things right—to chase away the shadow that clung to her and refused to fade. I wanted to hold her, to anchor her in comfort but before my fingers could reach hers, she was already gone.

Where had the girl gone? Who was she, really? Why did her pain cling to me like my own? Why did her sorrow feel so familiar—as if it had always lived beneath my skin?

Then the rain whispered to me who she was. My heart gave out. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I stood frozen. The wind carried nothing but silence, yet something in it shattered me.

The rain soaked me through, but I didn’t move. I couldn't.

Because somehow… I already knew.
