Unique Ways for Writers to Spark Article Ideas

How to keep your idea pot overflowing.

By Sam H ArnoldPublished 9 months ago 4 min read

We have all been there staring at the cursor as it flashes on the screen, wondering what we will write. As writers, we often search for that elusive spark of creativity to ignite our next great article.

Sometimes, inspiration flows effortlessly, while at other times, it evades us completely. We then look for articles on generating ideas and find that everyone says the same thing.

Fear not, fellow wordsmiths! There are countless unconventional and delightful ways to generate ideas for your articles, and we're here to explore some of the most intriguing ones.

People-Watching Adventures

People-watching is one of my favourite activities, and it got me into a few scraps. Have you ever been sitting there staring into space, thinking about an idea when the poor person opposite you thinks you are staring at them? This is one of the negatives of this method.

However, take a stroll through a bustling park, a quirky cafe, or even your local grocery store, and ideas will appear. Pay attention to the people around you, their conversations, and their peculiar habits.

Inspiration can strike when you least expect it. That quirky character you observed ordering an unusual latte might become the centrepiece of your next character-driven story.

Childhood Memories

Whether our childhood was excellent and filled with joy or miserable, there are ideas for a story. Using our personal stories also helps readers understand us and want to read more of our work.

Whether you dust off those old photo albums, dive deep into the recesses of your memory or read your old journals. Recalling your childhood can lead to heartwarming, relatable, and nostalgia-inducing content. Share anecdotes, lessons, or humorous escapades from your younger years. Chances are, your readers will find your reminiscences both endearing and entertaining.

Dreams and Nightmares

Someone once told me that Stephen King dreams a lot of his ideas. I have never been able to substantiate this or not, but if he does, the man needs a bedtime routine. Even though I hope your dreams are never as horrific as some of his characters, our dreams can provide the spark of an idea.

Our subconscious minds often churn out the most bizarre and intriguing scenarios during sleep. Keep a dream journal by your bedside and jot down those vivid, otherworldly dreams. These subconscious landscapes can be fertile ground for imaginative storytelling.

My latest novel started as a dream about the flooded world and how we survived as a family. It was a spark that grew into 70,000 words.

'What If' Scenarios

Challenge your creativity by posing 'what if' questions. What if humans could communicate with animals? What if gravity suddenly stopped working for a day?

One of these questions became a recent short story I wrote. 'What if animals were aliens checking in on us.' From this came the story for Five Strangers.

These whimsical hypothetical scenarios can lead to captivating thought experiments and speculative fiction. Explore the possibilities and let your imagination run wild.

If you struggle to come up with your own 'what if' scenarios, then look on the internet; many prompts can help spark an idea.

Conversations with Strangers

I love chatting with someone I haven't spoken to before. Working as much as I do in libraries, a carousel of interesting characters walks into my life—most of these like a chat, which suits me fine.

Strike up conversations with strangers in unexpected places—an airport lounge, a bus stop, or while waiting in line at the post office.

Engaging with people from diverse backgrounds can give you a treasure trove of unique perspectives, anecdotes, and life experiences that enrich your writing.

You never know if the person in the bus line might be the main protagonist of your new story.

Reimagine the Classics

There are very few new ideas in this world. Most of the plots have been covered before, but not by you. You can put your unique spin on any topic, which is why you could look at the classics and put a different twist on them.

My story, The Abandoned Beauty, is a modern version of an old fairy tale, which went on to be a runner up in a competition.

Put a creative twist on classic stories, myths, or fables. What if Cinderella lived in the modern age? How would the story of King Arthur unfold in a futuristic setting?

Remixing timeless tales can lead to thought-provoking and entertaining articles that resonate with traditionalists and contemporary enthusiasts.

If need be, mix up two or more classic stories. What about if Sleeping Beauty was rescued by King Arthur riding a dragon? The imagination is limitless, and so are the ideas.

Embrace Prompts and Challenges

If all else fails, the internet is full of people who want to help writers reach their full potential. There are also a limitless number of prompts and competitions you can enter. One of the reasons I am so fond of Vocal Media is the challenges they set. It allows you to think outside the box.

Participate in writing challenges, prompts, or contests. Websites and communities dedicated to writing often offer themed prompts or competitions that can jumpstart your creativity.

In the world of writing, inspiration is everywhere. By exploring these unconventional avenues, you'll discover endless possibilities for generating fresh article ideas.

Remember, sometimes, the most extraordinary concepts arise from ordinary circumstances. So, venture forth, embrace the unexpected, and let your unique perspective shine through in your writing.

Which of these ideas have you tried, or will you try?
