One thing about me is that I keep trying. I keep coming back. Unfortunately, I I've learned this by bombing out so many times.

I'm trying to learn lessons from my failures though. There's no point doing the same thing over and over again and failing in the same way. I try to keep making changes in the hope that eventually, something will stick. I'll find the formula that works.

These little stories are part of my most recent attempt to establish a regular writing practice.

I get a daily newsletter from Writers Write and each month has a list of daily writing prompts. I don't write something for the prompt every single day. But when I do, these are the rules I follow:

  • the title of the story is the prompt

  • the picture is the first result when searching the prompt

  • I must write at least 250 words

That's it. I can write whatever I want - fiction, non-fiction, poetry, list, whatever comes to mind. Mostly I've just been brain dumping whatever the prompt comes to mind.

I'll admit I've skipped days because I didn't like the prompt or couldn't think of anything. I want to get better at not doing that. I'd like to do it daily as well, but one thing I've learned from previous failed attempts is that I have to give myself wiggle room. If I make the rule "must write everyday", as soon as I miss a day I stop doing it altogether. If I say, "I'll do it when I can" then I think I'll keep at it longer.
