Thoughts on Being a Multi-Genre Writer

Ray Bradbury, Steven King, J.K. Rowling, and Margaret Atwood. What do these writers have in common?

They are multi-genre writers.

I consider myself a multi-genre writer. I like writing under multiple topics and genres although I do tend to fall back on paranormal horror and sci-fi.

It’s also enjoyable to read from other multi-genre writers because you just never know what you’re going to read next! You get a little variety.

Over here on Vocal, I write in a multitude of different topics and genres. I write about my own writing journey, music and pop culture, paranormal horror stories and urban legends, poetry, and my life experiences. I’ve even ventured into writing things I didn’t think I’d even be interested in writing like love poetry.

In short, I write a little bit of everything.

It can be quite challenging going from writing a spooky paranormal horror story to shifting gears and writing love poetry.

It’s challenging because each genre has it’s own writing style. You have to shift gears and switch your creative mindset from, say, a suspenseful murder mystery with a cunning murderer and clever detective to a more light-hearted humor piece.

When I write in one genre and want to switch to another, I take a break in between to give myself a chance to reset and shift gears. I might go for a walk to clear my mind. This is a must especially when the genres are noticeably different.

To help put me in the mood to write in a certain genre, I’ll watch a few shows that are in that specific genre. For paranormal horror, for instance, I might turn on some ghost story / investigation shows or any show that focuses on the spookiness of the unexplained.

Aside from its challenges, it’s fun being a multi-genre writer! It’s a great way to help keep your creative juices flowing.
