The Last Message" Waiting in line at a coffee shop is the most common way Jamie and Alex met. Alex and Jamie both ordered black coffee. The synchronicity made them giggle. A shared table, a conversation, and by the end of the hour, phone numbers were exchanged. The relationship grew fast. They texted constantly, spent weekends exploring the city, had sleepovers that turned into full weeks together. Friends said it was too fast. But it felt easy. Natural. Jamie had found love after the third month. One Sunday morning, wrapped in a blanket on Alex’s couch, Jamie looked up and said it. “I love you.” Alex gave a soft, almost sorrowful smile. “I know.” Jamie awaited extra. It didn’t come. Jamie dismissed it later. Not everyone says it at the same time. Maybe Alex was scared. That was adequate. Love is messy. But little things started to feel off. Alex stopped answering texts right away. Sometimes it took an entire day. Plans were made and canceled. Jamie would catch Alex staring off, distracted, then snapping back with a forced smile. Jamie finally inquired, "Is there something wrong?" "No, just work stuff," Alex said. The distance continued to grow. The night that changed everything followed. "If anything happens to me, remember I love you. – A" was the message Jamie received. The panic started right away. Jamie contacted. No response. Texted. Nothing. called once more. immediately to voicemail. Jamie dashed out of the room. The apartment of Alex was pitch black, but the door was unlocked. Inside, everything looked normal. No sign of struggle. But no Alex. Jamie called the police, filed a report, gave them the message. Days passed. then for weeks. No updates. It appeared as though Alex had vanished into thin air. The worst was assumed by people. A runaway, a suicide, maybe something worse. Jamie refused to believe any of it. Love doesn’t just vanish. Six months later, a letter arrived. No return address. Just Jamie’s name in familiar handwriting. There was only one piece of paper inside: > “I told you once that I loved you. That was accurate. I wasn't, however, who you thought I was. And you were never supposed to know. If you’re reading this, it means I didn’t make it. You’ll probably have questions. Some I can’t answer. However, keep in mind that the meeting with you was not planned. Loving you wasn’t either. But it happened. And it changed everything. Don’t look for me. It’s not safe. – A” Jamie read it several times as he shook as he sat on the couch. Not safe? Who is entitled to know? What plan? Then came another letter. This one from a stranger: > “You don’t know me. But I knew Alex. We collaborated. Kind of. I can’t say much, but you need to understand—Alex wasn’t who you thought. They were undercover. Deep cover. Administration level. The relationship wasn’t supposed to happen. But it did. We think Alex was compromised. Disappeared before they could be extracted. We don’t know if they’re dead. But if they are, it wasn’t random. They left something for you. Soon you'll receive it. Be ready.” Jamie didn’t sleep that night. Three days later, a package showed up. Inside: a flash drive and a note in Alex’s handwriting. > “You’re the only one I trust.” Jamie connected the drive. countless encrypted files One folder labeled: TRUTH. Inside, a video. Alex is serious and fixed on the camera on the screen. > "I'm probably long gone if you see this. I couldn't tell you the truth, so I didn't. I was part of an operation tracking illegal arms movements tied to people high up in multiple governments. I was so absorbed in it that I lost track of who I really was. Then I met you. You reminded me I was still human. I broke every rule by falling for you. I thought I could protect you by keeping you out of it. But I was wrong. If they find out you have this, they’ll come for you. So if you choose to open the files… you need to disappear. I’m sorry, Jamie. We need more time, I wish. I love you.” Jamie sat motionless with a racing heart. Every memory suddenly recontextualized. Everything, from the odd look to the disappearing act to the moment of silence, made sense. Alex had a spy job. The relationship had started as an accident. Yet the love was genuine. Jamie was now holding something for which people were willing to die. For hours, Jamie sat with the drive. Debating. Turn it in? To withdraw? Disappear? Love ultimately made the decision. Jamie uploaded the files to five trusted sources, encrypted them, and made one demand: full investigation, full exposure. If they wanted the truth, they’d need to protect the source. Jamie then left the apartment with a bag and vanished. No forwarding address. No trace Just like Alex. --- A person ordered black coffee months later in a remote South American café. Then looked up and said, “You always liked it this way.” Jamie turned. Alex was alive but bruised as he stood there. I was unable to reach you. I had no idea whether they had you. I only recently emerged. Jamie didn’t speak. merely walked over and gave them a hug. The world remained unsafe. But for a moment, love had won. And maybe that was enough. --- If you want a different version with a different tone or twist, let me know.
