The Last Letter

A Love That Time Couldn’t Erase

By Happy NzePublished 2 years ago • 2 min read

Lena sat by the window, her frail hands trembling as she unfolded the letter—its edges worn from decades of being read and reread. Outside, autumn leaves swirled in the golden afternoon light, just as they had on the day he left. Fifty years. It had been fifty years since James boarded that train, promising to return. They were young then, full of dreams and stolen kisses beneath the old oak tree in the town square. He had enlisted, believing he was fighting for something greater, while she had stayed behind, writing him letters filled with love, longing, and whispered wishes for the future. For a while, he wrote back. His letters smelled of dust and gunpowder, but his words were always gentle, always filled with dreams of coming home. Wait for me, Lena. Just a little longer. And so she did. Then, one day, the letters stopped. Weeks turned into months, and months into years. The war ended, but James never returned. She searched for his name in every casualty list, every missing persons report, but found nothing. It was as if he had vanished into the wind. Lena never married. She never stopped waiting. And then, on her seventy-fifth birthday, a package arrived—a box wrapped in brown paper, faded with age. Her hands trembled as she opened it, and there, inside, was a stack of letters… all addressed to her. Tears blurred her vision as she recognized James’ handwriting. The first letter, dated a year after his disappearance, explained everything. He had been wounded, captured, and kept in a foreign land for years, unable to reach her. When he was finally freed, he wrote to her again and again. But his letters had never reached her—lost in the maze of war and time. And then, the last letter. My dearest Lena, If you are reading this, then somehow, my words have found you at last. I have loved you every day of my life, even in the years when I could not find my way back to you. If only I could hold you once more, see the autumn leaves in your hair, feel your hand in mine. I am sorry I never made it home. But know this—my heart has never left you. Forever yours, James. Lena pressed the letter to her chest, silent tears slipping down her cheeks. Outside, the wind whispered through the golden leaves, carrying with it a love that time could never erase.
