Returning Kindness makes heart into gold

I was doing my PhD research that was funded by a government organization. The budget was good so I could hire some helpers to assist me in the project. My research was about insect predators, predators are those insects that eat other insects and help in reducing the usage of pesticides. My hero in my research was Green Lacewing and I was working on its artificial diet so we could rear it in the laboratory.

Anyways, let's get back to the topic and that is I wanted to engage a young boy whose job description was to assist me in data collection and other field aspects that were laborious and time-consuming for me.

I asked my project coordinator to hire a better person who could understand my work and would complete it in a better way. Aamir, a young boy from a poor family, was hired for the job. He was a tall, good-looking but quite shy person in his age group. His family's economic conditions compelled him to work rather than study.

I liked his honesty and hard work. He was quite younger than me and as team leader, I wanted to treat him with kindness so he may feel comfortable in my laboratory. I started giving him small tips to improve his personality and perspective about life.

During lunch hour whatever I ordered for myself, I used to order for him as a gesture of kindness and also had a feeling that he might have no much money. On my insistence, he always accepted my offer with a shyness that looked cute to me.

On the day he got his salary, he was thrilled. At lunchtime, I was looking for him so I could order my food but he was not in the laboratory. I was waiting for him and was getting angry at his carelessness and for not informing me about his absence.

Aamir entered the laboratory with a high smile and holding a tray with patties on plates. I was amazed at how he decided on his own about the food. Before I could ask him about anything he told me happily that food was on him as it was his first salary and wanted to give me a treat. A pleasant feeling wrapped around my heart. I felt a relaxation that I had a value in his eyes.

His act made him special in my eyes and I still remember his face even after 21 years. He was a remarkable person who wanted to give back the kindness. He was poor but his heart was rare gold.
