I cannot get enough of podcasts. It is wonderful to hear all of the stories and interviews available from across the world on all kinds of topics, and I do listen to a wide range of topics. As an aspiring writer, I have discovered a few podcasts on writing and books that have fantastic tips and tricks that provide tips or at least let me know I am not alone in whatever challenge I am having.

Writer’s Routine

While the title is a bit self-explanatory and may appear to be a rather boring topic, rest assured it is not. The host, Dan Simpson, interviews various writers with an eye to their daily routine and habits as well as their tools and writing style.

There are so many nuggets of great advice in this podcast in that you hear what works for different people. Everyone is different and you are bound to hear from an author that prefers an approach to writing similar to how you approach or would like to approach writing.

In addition to the routines of the writers, the conversations frequently move into overcoming roadblocks, how ideas are generated, and all the things that are on writers' minds.

Writing Excuses

This podcast began being hosted by the writers Brandon Sanderson, Dan Wells, and Howard Tayler and was only available online. I must admit I found this one strictly because I am a Brandon Sanderson fan.

It is now available on various podcast applications and the hosts have grown to include Mary Robinette Kowal, DongWon Song, and Erin Roberts. Each episode ranges from fifteen to thirty minutes. The hosts, and sometimes a guest, discuss writing topics, tips, and advice.

For my fellow fantasy fans, Patrick Rothfuss has been a guest more than once. The best bit is that each episode concludes with writing homework. It is the writing homework that draws me to this podcast.

The Creative Penn Podcast

Hosted by Joanna Penn, this is a great writing podcast about self-publishing, writing, and book marketing advice. I enjoy the interviews. Joanna is cheerful with a pleasant voice and she keeps the interviews moving. She really dives deep into the self-publishing world, but she also includes a lot of great writing tips for any writer. Her podcasts are one hour long each.

DIY MFA Radio

Hosted by Gabriela Pereira, this podcast is another great one providing tips and tricks and interviews with authors, master writing teachers, and publishing industry insiders. Each episode is around forty-five minutes and it covers all things writing and I like that her interviews include more than just authors. She explores the entire writing industry. Gabriela is also quite active on her DIY MFA Facebook page if you need a support group to help you get your butt in the chair and start writing.

The Book Review

Hosted by Gilbert Cruz, this podcast runs about thirty minutes per episode and includes discussions with authors, critics, and editors at The New York Times Book Review to discuss top books. Many writers are also heavy readers. This podcast is great since it keeps you aware of what books are popular and gives an idea of what you may like to read next or where to find your next inspiration.

What is your favorite writing podcast? I love learning about new podcasts!
