My Only Son Turns 14!

Sky is the limit

My lovely boy,

Those two tiny stripes on the test kit sparked my joy and signaled the immense responsibility coming into my life! When you were growing inside me, it became harder to balance work life. While others spoke of the glow of pregnancy, mine was a season of struggle. Evening sickness and nausea drained my strength, and each passing day felt like an uphill climb. For seven months, I lived on mere bites of an apple, feeling less like myself and more like a shadow of who I used to be.

Once my mother, with so much love, brought me a pair of beautiful earrings from a local fair. Instead of gratitude, I lashed out at her saying, "How can I think of beauty when I can barely survive?" But she smiled that seemed cruel to me and said, "to be a mother is not so easy. Some face more hardship than others, but in the end, you will forget it all when you see the innocent face." And she was right.

I admit and regret a fleeting, foolish thought ever crossed my mind when I questioned whether surviving or giving birth was more important. But as the months passed and the nausea faded, my heart filled with eager anticipation. By the seventh month, I was no longer just enduring, I was joyfully waiting for you.

Finally, the moment came! I brought you into this world with a stone-piercing cry and unbearable agony, yet in that very moment, all the pain faded into the joy of holding you for the first time. With your birth, I was reborn too—not just as a mother, but as a woman whose heart would forever beat in rhythm with her child’s. My life was no longer just mine; it became intertwined with yours. Every giggle, every tiny hand reaching for mine pulled me home faster from my work.

Oh, how I cherished your baby babbles, the way your little hands clung to me, the way you missed me when I was away. Every moment with you felt like life paying me back for the pain I endured before you arrived.

But time is a fast traveler, and before I knew it, my sweet little boy began to change. At twelve, your voice deepened; at thirteen, your world expanded beyond me. Gadgets and friends filled your time, and suddenly, I was no longer your center. My heart ached as I watched the distance grow between us. I searched for my little boy in the young man standing before me, but he was slipping away. I cried in silence, missing the child who once needed me for everything.

Yet, my love, I understand. This is life’s way. You are growing into your own person, just as I once did. You have given me the deepest understanding of my own mother’s love. I miss her with every passing moment and feel, deeply, the weight of every struggle she endured while raising me.

I have no doubt that you will shine brightly in life, both through your strong values and your professional journey.

My son, no matter how tall you grow or how far you wander, you will always be my world. My love for you is endless, my heart forever yours. I only ask one thing—don’t forget me in your journey ahead. Because if you stop loving me, my world will turn barren.

Happy 14th birthday, my love. You will always be my little boy.

Endless love and best wishes -

Your mom.
