My First Month on Vocal and Discovering There Are More Writers Than Readers
My first impressions after joining Vocal
After spending my first month on Vocal, I have started to notice something interesting about the platform. There are a lot of talented writers here, people who put time, thought, and emotion into their work, yet it seems there are far more writers than readers.
Yesterday, I decided to spend the day doing something I enjoy: reading other people's work and leaving comments. I went through around 35 different posts, taking the time to read their stories, poems, and articles. I wanted to support other writers because I know how much it means when someone takes a few minutes to engage with something you created.
What surprised me was how few responses came back. I received hardly any replies to my comments, and after spending the day reading and interacting with others, my own post received only one read.
That experience made me think about how I want to approach Vocal moving forward. I believe in supporting writers who support each other. If someone takes the time to read my work and leave a meaningful comment, I want to return that kindness by reading and commenting on their work. Writing can feel like a lonely process, and a genuine connection between writers can make a huge difference.
One thing I have noticed is that you can often tell when someone has truly read your work by the comment they leave. This especially stands out with poetry. I have seen many comments on poems where the person only mentions the final stanza. When that happens, it often feels like they may have skipped through the poem rather than experiencing the entire piece.
That is unfortunate because there are some incredibly talented writers on this platform. There are people creating beautiful poetry, powerful personal stories, and thoughtful articles who deserve readers who take the time to fully experience their work.
I also understand that my own writing may appeal to a smaller audience. A lot of what I write focuses on true crime and mysteries, along with the psychology behind the people and events involved. I think that comes from my interest in understanding human behavior and what drives people to make the choices they make.
Vocal has given me a chance to discover new writers, share my own work, and become part of a larger writing community. My first month has been an interesting learning experience. I have seen incredible creativity here, and I hope more writers begin making the effort to become readers as well.
At the end of the day, writers need readers, and readers need writers. A platform becomes stronger when people support each other beyond posting their own work. Sometimes a thoughtful comment can mean as much as the words we spend hours writing.
