My Alter Ego's Assassination

Shadow Spine

By Logan StanislawPublished 8 days ago • 2 min read

There are nights when the house exhales

and every shadow lengthens its spine,

leaning toward me

as though it remembers

everything I’ve tried to forget.

I move through the rooms softly,

a rumor of myself,

like a flicker in the glass.

The air tastes of old decisions

and unopened doors.

Something watches from the hinge

between heartbeat and hesitation.

I have worn many faces.

Some fit like borrowed coats,

some cling like wet leaves,

some whisper when I try to sleep.

But one—

one has followed me for years,

a silhouette stitched to my breath,

a grin sharpened on my doubts.

It rises now,

a second pulse beneath my own,

a twin carved from the marrow

of every impulse I buried

every lie I have run from.

It steps out of me

with the confidence of a secret

that has waited too long.

Its eyes gleam with recognition.

Its smile is the echo

of every moment I pretended

I was whole.

This time, I do not run.

I do not bow.

I stand in the trembling quiet

and feel the truth settle

like dust on a forgotten shelf.

The confrontation is silent—

no clash,

no cry,

only the slow unraveling

of the boundary between us.

I strip away the excuses.

I peel back the shame.

I expose the hidden motives

that gnawed at my choices

like mice in the walls.

The second self flickers.

Its outline blurs.

Its grin falters.

And with a calm

I did not expect,

I lift my hand—

a gesture small as a breath,

sharp as a verdict—

and speak the words

that sever the tether:

With stealthy gesticulation,

my alter ego’s assassination.

The room inhales.

The shadow thins.

The double dissolves

like smoke slipping through the trees,

leaving only the faintest trace

of what I used to fear.

I remain.

Singular.

Steady.

A quiet figure in a quiet house

that no longer breathes for me.

And in the stillness that follows,

I feel a new pulse—

not victory,

not relief,

but a gentle peace

earned in the soft aftermath

of choosing myself

over the version

that tried to take my place.
