Learning By Example

When I think about where and who I want to be in 2024, a myriad of names floods my mind, and I think: I want to be like that, I want to be like them.

I want my work to pop on a page, leaving people biting at the bit to see what I have to offer, like yours do to me.

I scan Vocal daily, searching for the specially prepared feasts and treats I am bound to find, hiding behind a clever title - signed by an author I have come to love.

As I delve into the words and works of those I have fallen for, and those I have yet to experience. I know, without doubt, I am about to be schooled.

And I am grateful for the opportunities to become better. Touched by the words that flow so effortlessly and boldly onto the pages - I can't put down.

As I take a moment to reflect on all of the ways Vocal has helped me shape my goals, I realize that I have found, through Vocal, a rare and exquisite camaraderie unlike any other.

A group of people, where the talent is perfectly blended between dangerously cynical sarcasm and raw, transparent talent.

I am surrounded by hundreds of skillful souls - strangers, an array of first-class people, who generously offer genuine support.

And I am thankful.

I couldn't begin to name names or adequately shower you with the proper accolades. But I am fully aware that I wouldn’t be able to write nearly as honestly, or confidently without the faithful support you have selflessly given.

Reflection is like a double-edged sword. Showing me progress and failure. Cutting away pieces of me, to shape and create something far better.

In 2023, I wrote a lot...

But I didn't realize just HOW much, until Vocal sent these reverbs out. It was amazing to see what 2023 looked like on paper and incredibly helpful for tracking my progress.

In those 919 stories, 22 were top stories! Honestly, that number caught me, pleasantly, by surprise, although I have never placed in a challenge, which sometimes stings. It has become a driving force, keeping me working harder to improve myself.

Cheers to the stories we have held within. The labored ones, that tear open wounds exposing a heart and pouring its contents out, staining the pages.

And, to the not so labored works that bring a smile, and a sense of humor for some much-needed peace.

My 2024 goals are not only to continue to discover and reveal who I AM, but to use your influences to transform completely, becoming a writer inspired.

I want to try and write something every day. Even if it is only getting into my drafts, I will be starting something.

I will also read what you are writing. After all, that interaction is what makes us better.

I'll keep throwing my heart at life's big canvas to see what masterpiece awaits.
