Know Your Story's Ending

We've all been given or have looked for writing advice. We look for advice when we feel stuck in our writings or just want to improve as a writer. Some advice we find life changing while other advice, not so much. Not because it's bad advice but because with writing, any advice isn't one size fits all. You have to write and experiment with what works for you!

One piece of writing advice I've been given is that you should know your story’s ending. This mainly applies to fiction but I'm sure under the right circumstances, will also work for nonfiction.

Knowing how your story ends does not have to mean that you know precisely what will happen at the end of your story. It just means that you have a general idea of what will happen at the end.

My favorite thing about this advice is that it has helped me so much when I’ve reached a dead end. What happens next?

I can work from the ending backwards. It’s piecing the story from a different direction. The pieces of the story all fall together and connect like a puzzle.

Note: There’s so much writing advice out there! What works for one person might not work for the next, including this one. It’s important to seek out the writing advice that works for you!
