I want to tell you about the moment I genuinely thought I was about to die in a Spirit Airlines terminal.

Airlines are being forced to wait longer for maintenance, which in turn puts pressure on their entire fleet schedules. It's not a crisis you'll read about in a viral tweet. But it's very real, very expensive, and quietly affecting the reliability of the flights you take every week.
Why Does This Matter to Me And to You?
I used to be the kind of traveler who showed up at the airport, got on the plane, and gave approximately zero thought to what was happening underneath that aircraft. The wheels appeared. The wheels retracted. We landed. That was the full extent of my relationship with landing gear.

The entire field is being reimagined.
And yet here we are in 2026, with a backlog in the very parts that keep our planes rolling safely down the runway.
What I Think About Now Before Every Flight
I'm not writing this to make you anxious about flying. Aviation is still, statistically, the safest form of long-distance travel on earth. The systems in place from FAA certification to mandatory maintenance intervals to the very speed tape that sent me spiraling exist because aviation takes safety more seriously than almost any other industry.
But I do think there's something worth sitting with here: most of us are deeply, willfully ignorant about the machines that carry us through the sky at 35,000 feet. We panic about tape and ignore landing gear shortages. We fear the visible and overlook the systemic.
What changed for me was attention. The moment I stopped scrolling and actually looked out that window actually asked what I was seeing, actually followed the thread I became a more informed, less fearful, and honestly more fascinated traveler.
Speed tape is fine. The guy in Vans on the wing knows what he's doing. The landing gear situation is worth monitoring. And the next time something looks weird on your flight, maybe film it but also, maybe Google it before you post.
