In the fascinating world of storytelling, we often come across an intriguing subplot known as the B-Story.

Its primary role extends far beyond simply providing a secondary tale. Rather, it serves as a potent tool to bolster the theme and to teach the hero the lessons they desperately need.

This blog post aims to shed light on the fascinating role of the B-Story within a narrative.

What exactly is a B-story?

Ever wondered what exactly the B-Story is?

It's typically a subplot involving a romantic interest, a mentor, or a family relationship. This subplot isn't just thrown in sporadically—it's carefully introduced around the Break Into Two beat, with key moments sprinkled throughout the narrative. The B-Story hits the theme more overtly, teaching the hero a lesson they need to learn, often through a character who contrasts with the hero or serves as a loyal companion.

For example: in the classic Disney movie The Lion King, Simba's relationship with his father-mentor, Mufasa, serves as a powerful B-Story. It guides Simba through all of his hardships and ultimately teaches him the responsibility he needs to take on as an adult.

Who is the B-story character?

The choice of character in the B-Story should ideally align with the lesson the hero needs to learn.

Further, the B-Story should focus on a character who is both sympathetic and wise. By showing the hero a positive example, it helps them stay engaged in their journey.

For instance, if your hero needs to learn how to be brave, you might introduce a mentor figure who stands up for what they believe in. This mentor can then serve as an example of courage that your hero can draw upon. Or, if the theme is about trust, a jaded loner might be the perfect foil for the hero. Similarly, if the theme is empathy, then an emotional guru could be the ideal choice. This relationship should create a natural friction with the hero, helping reflect the theme and expose the flaw in the hero's thinking, something the hero is initially blind to.

For example: the B-Story between Professor McGonagall and Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In her strict yet caring manner, she acts as a mentor figure to Harry that helps him stay focused on his journey amidst all adversity.

How does a writer incorporate the B-story?

The B-Story should be seamlessly woven into the narrative.

Meaningful interactions between the hero and the B-Story character should be dotted throughout the acts—moments that challenge the hero's beliefs through dialogue and conflict. By the finale, the history and changes in the B-Story should be profound enough to impact the hero's defining choice.

For example: Take the case of the classic movie "The Karate Kid." Daniel LaRusso's relationship with Mr. Miyagi serves as the perfect B-Story. Mr. Miyagi not only teaches Daniel karate but also imparts valuable life lessons on balance, patience, and respect. This B-Story effectively drives the central theme and transforms both Daniel and Mr. Miyagi's characters by the end of the film.

The final word

The B-Story holds a transformative power in shaping the hero's journey.

When crafted thoughtfully, it becomes more than just a romantic or platonic subplot—it becomes an essential tool for reinforcing growth and engaging readers. By using the B-Story effectively, you can take your narrative from a simple tale to an unforgettable journey of growth and learning.

Harness the power of the B-Story and watch your hero and your readers transform.
