A new study updates the planetary boundary frame and shows mortal conditioning are decreasingly impacting the earth and, thereby, adding the threat of driving dramatic changes in overall Earth conditions.

Planetary Boundaries and Human Influence
The nine “planetary boundaries” represent elements of the global environment that regulate the stability and living conditions of people on the planet. The extent to which the safety limits are exceeded is due to human activities affecting the components. The Planetary Boundaries Framework uses the latest science about how the Earth system works to define a “safe operating space.” for humanity by proposing limits to the extent to which human activities can influence critical processes without risking irreversible changes to the Earth conditions on which we live.
For the first time, measurements for all boundaries were presented. Six limits were exceeded, with the number of exceedances increasing for all limits except terrestrial ozone depletion. It is not enough to focus on climate on a global scale. Developing Earth system models that accurately reflect boundary interactions, particularly climate and biosphere integrity, is an urgent priority.
The study, published in the journal Science Advances, represents the third update of the framework, conducted by 29 scientists from eight different countries.
The “blood pressure” on Earth is too high
The trend towards increasing border crossings is worrying, says Katherine Richardson, professor at the Globe Institute, director of the Sustainability Science Center at the University of Copenhagen and responsible for the study:
“That Exceeding the six limits does not necessarily mean disaster will occur, but it is a clear warning sign. We can think about this when we measure our blood pressure. A blood pressure over 120/80 does not guarantee a heart attack, but it does increase the risk of it occurring. That's why we're trying to reduce it. For ourselves and our children, we must reduce the pressure on the boundaries of these six planets."

A key conclusion of the study is that there is a need for greater focus cross-border interactions:
“It is not enough to focus on human-caused climate change if we want to protect the Earth system from irreversible damage,” says Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the origin of the Framework in 2009.

Enhanced Earth System Models Needed
A world that develops within science defined boundaries is the only way to navigate our current situation with rising, potentially catastrophic risks, at the planetary scale.
