The universe takes and gives everything you didn’t know you needed. These prompts are an invitation to step inside yourself and explore what balance means to you. Rupi Kaur

Romantic partners are fun

much of the time we have won

the lottery and then you

stand and say, I do

~

Takes a while to get it right

doesn't help to be uptight

love them anyway I say

lighten up today

~

The universe gives us all

we need and can handle doll

and when not give God a call

take time off to bawl

~

Rupi Kaur's Balance Writing Prompts - What balance of routine and spontaneity feels the most fulfilling?

When married without children, I did most of the cooking. Then when the kids came along, each of two husbands would cook. I loved that. They enjoyed cooking and I looked at it as something I had to do.

With my husband today, he is not a cook, and he is a meat and potatoes kind of guy. He was a bachelor for several years before we married and he was raised by parents who owned a bar and restaurant, where he could order whatever he wanted to eat.

My husband is fussy. He was buying his favorite quick meals when I met him. Things I wouldn't choose to eat. So he saw me as fussy. He didn't eat many of the meals I would fix.

Today, when we don't have family or friends over we are on our own many times at home and at restaurants we order what we enjoy eating. We both consider breakfast our favorite meal and will often have breakfast for dinner and he cooks the best eggs, having learned from our grandson.

Rupi Kaur's Balance Writing Prompts - Safe and stable relationships help you get through stressful times. Who comes to mind when you think of these relationships and why?

My current husband. He is strong and safe. I know that he loves me and mine. I can tell he loves me when he looks me in the eyes. His love shows. He tells me and I believe that he loves me and is proud of me.

Just knowing that I trust him alone provides safety and stability. Then he is there for me and beside me in stressful times.

Rupi Kaur's Balance Writing Prompts - How do you find balance within a romantic relationship?

Being a team is how I see balance in my romantic relationships. It is important to share childcare, whether it was children or now grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I have had three longer-term romantic relationships.

With husband number one, we had time together before we had children. Five years to get to know each other and then time to figure out our role in the relationship. When our children came along, we shared the responsibilities of child care. We were together for 15 years.

With husband number two, I had two children and he brought a son into our home. The children were instant siblings and not yet teens. We figured it out right away. We would share parenting and our role in the relationship. We continued successfully until we were empty nesters.

We divorced soon after. We were together 3 years before marriage and for 10 years of marriage for a total of 13 years together.

With husband number three, we were together for 4 years and will have been married for 20 years in December of 2024. Our children were all grown when we were married. His youngest daughter had graduated from high school and turned 18 before our marriage.

We continue to have all 7 children, grandchidren, and great-grandchildren in our life and we love that. We have a fairly good system as a team and know what our role is in our relationship. We are as satisfied as we can each be.

Are there things we would change? Yes. Are we mostly okay with our love and roles? Yes.
