Annapurna Base Camp Trek in 5 Days From Pokhara

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) sits at an elevation of 4,130 meters (13,549 feet) in the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by some of the world's most dramatic Himalayan peaks — including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Machapuchare (6,993 m), Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna. While the classic ABC trek typically takes 10–12 days, a 5-day express itinerary from Pokhara is achievable for fit, experienced trekkers who are comfortable with longer daily walking hours and moderate altitude gain.

⚠️ Important Note: The 5-day itinerary involves significant daily elevation gain and is best suited for trekkers with prior high-altitude hiking experience and good physical fitness. Altitude sickness is a real risk — know the symptoms and never push through them.

Quick Facts

  • Trek Start/End:Pokhara
  • Maximum Elevation: 4,130 m (13,549 ft)
  • Total Distance~110 km (round trip)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Best Season: March–May, September–November
  • Accommodation: Teahouses
  • Permits Required: ACAP

Permits Required

Before setting off, two permits are mandatory:

1. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Cost: NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals (approx. USD $22)

Obtainable in Pokhara at the Nepal Tourism Board office

2. TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System)

Cost: USD $10–$20 depending on group/individual

Also obtainable at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Pokhara

Both permits can be arranged in Pokhara on the morning of Day 1 before driving to the trailhead, or ideally the day before departure.

Getting to the Trailhead

The trek begins from Nayapul or Jhinu Danda, both accessible by private vehicle or local bus from Pokhara. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Most trekkers arrange a private jeep through their guesthouse or trekking agency the evening before, departing Pokhara by 6:00–7:00 AM to maximize daylight hiking time.

5-Day Itinerary

🥾 Day 1: Pokhara → Jhinu Danda → Chhomrong

Drive: Pokhara to Nayapul/Jhinu Danda (~1.5–2 hrs)

Trek: Jhinu Danda to Chhomrong

Walking Time: 5–6 hours

Elevation: 1,780 m → 2,170 m

Distance: ~12 km

After arriving at Jhinu Danda, the trail climbs steadily through terraced farmland, rhododendron and oak forests, and traditional Gurung villages. The ascent to Chhomrong is steep in sections but rewards trekkers with the first stunning views of Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain) and Annapurna South. Chhomrong is a large, well-serviced village with good teahouses, restaurants, and facilities — it is the last major village before entering the Annapurna Sanctuary.

Highlights:

  • First views of Machapuchare and Annapurna South
  • Traditional Gurung village life
  • Chhomrong Khola river crossing

Accommodation: Teahouse in Chhomrong

Meals: Breakfast in Pokhara / Lunch and Dinner on trail

🥾 Day 2: Chhomrong → Dovan (via Sinuwa & Bamboo)

Walking Time: 6–7 hours

Elevation: 2,170 m → 2,600 m

Distance: ~14 km

This is one of the most varied and scenic days of the trek. From Chhomrong, the trail descends steeply via stone steps to the Chhomrong Khola, then climbs back up through dense forest to Sinuwa (2,340 m). The route continues through increasingly lush jungle, passing through Kuldi and Bamboo (2,310 m) — named for the dense bamboo groves that line the trail — before a final climb to Dovan (2,600 m).

The forest here is rich in wildlife including the elusive red panda, Himalayan tahr, and numerous bird species. The sound of the Modi Khola river accompanies much of the day's walk.

Highlights:

  • Dense rhododendron and bamboo forest
  • Modi Khola river valley
  • Possible red panda sightings
  • Increasing sense of wilderness as you enter the Sanctuary approach

Accommodation: Teahouse in Dovan

Meals: All meals on trail

🥾 Day 3: Dovan → Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)

Walking Time: 7–8 hours

Elevation: 2,600 m → 4,130 m

Distance: ~16 km

This is the longest and most demanding day of the 5-day itinerary, pushing all the way to base camp in a single push. The trail passes through Himalaya Hotel (2,920 m), Deurali (3,230 m), and Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC, 3,700 m) before the final ascent to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m).

The landscape transforms dramatically as you ascend — forest gives way to open moraine, glacial valleys, and eventually the extraordinary Annapurna Sanctuary: a natural amphitheatre ringed on all sides by towering Himalayan giants. The view upon arriving at ABC is among the most breathtaking in all of Nepal, with Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare, Gangapurna, and Annapurna III forming a complete circle of peaks around the camp.

⚠️ Altitude Warning: The gain from Dovan to ABC in a single day (~1,530 m) is aggressive. Start early (by 6:00 AM), walk slowly, stay hydrated, and eat well. If you feel symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) — severe headache, nausea, loss of coordination — do not continue. Descend immediately.

Highlights:

  • Machhapuchhre Base Camp viewpoint
  • Entry into the Annapurna Sanctuary
  • 360° panorama of 7,000–8,000 m peaks at ABC
  • Sunrise/sunset on Annapurna I if timing allows

Accommodation: Teahouse at ABC (limited, book ahead in peak season)

Meals: All meals on trail

🥾 Day 4: ABC → Bamboo (via MBC & Deurali)

Walking Time: 6–7 hours

Elevation: 4,130 m → 2,310 m

Distance: ~18 km

Wake early for sunrise at ABC — the golden light on Annapurna I and Machapuchare is a moment that stays with trekkers for a lifetime. After breakfast, begin the long descent retracing the route through MBC, Deurali, Himalaya Hotel, and Dovan, continuing all the way down to Bamboo to maximize the descent and make Day 5 manageable.

Descending is significantly faster than ascending, but the knees take a beating on the stone steps — trekking poles are highly recommended. The forest sections feel lush and welcoming after the stark high-altitude terrain of the Sanctuary.

Highlights:

  • Sunrise at Annapurna Base Camp
  • Long descent through the Sanctuary and forest zones
  • Recovery from altitude as you drop into thicker air

Accommodation: Teahouse in Bamboo

Meals: All meals on trail

🥾 Day 5: Bamboo → Chhomrong → Jhinu Danda → Pokhara

Walking Time: 5–6 hours trekking + 2 hour drive

Elevation: 2,310 m → 1,780 m

Distance: ~14 km trek

The final day climbs back through Sinuwa and up to Chhomrong for a last look at those magnificent Annapurna and Machapuchare views, then descends steeply to Jhinu Danda. If time and energy allow, Jhinu Danda's natural hot springs are a perfect reward after five days of hard trekking — a short 10-minute walk below the village leads to riverside hot spring pools that soothe tired muscles beautifully. Your pre-arranged vehicle picks you up at Jhinu Danda or Nayapul for the drive back to Pokhara, arriving in the late afternoon.

Highlights:

  • Final views of Machapuchare and Annapurna South from Chhomrong
  • Jhinu Danda natural hot springs
  • Return to Pokhara — celebration dinner well earned!

Accommodation: Hotel in Pokhara

Meals: Breakfast and lunch on trail / Dinner in Pokhara

Spring (March–May) — Rhododendron forests in full bloom, warm temperatures, good visibility. May can bring pre-monsoon clouds in the afternoons.

Avoid: Monsoon (June–August) — heavy rain, leeches, landslide risk, poor visibility. Winter (December–February) — snow closes higher sections, ABC can be inaccessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for ABC trek?

Yes, for physically fit trekkers with prior hiking experience. It is a demanding schedule with long daily walking hours, but fully achievable.

Do I need a guide?

A guide is not mandatory but is strongly recommended, especially on the aggressive 5-day schedule. A guide ensures safety, handles logistics, and enriches the cultural experience. A porter is also highly recommended to reduce physical strain.

Is altitude sickness a risk?

Yes. At 4,130 m, ABC is at a significant altitude. The 5-day itinerary allows less acclimatization time than the standard route. Know the symptoms of AMS and descend immediately if they occur.

Is the trail well marked?

Yes. The ABC trail is one of the best-marked trekking routes in Nepal with teahouses at regular intervals. Getting lost is unlikely, but a guide adds an extra layer of security.

What is the temperature at ABC?

Daytime temperatures at ABC range from 5°C to 15°C in peak season. Nights can drop to -10°C or below. A warm sleeping bag and down jacket are essential.

The Annapurna Base Camp trek in 5 days is intense, rewarding, and unforgettable. Plan carefully, pack smart, and the Annapurna Sanctuary will offer you one of the greatest mountain experiences on Earth.
