Yamaha Appoints David Munoz as Crew Chief to Guide Jorge Martin’s M1 Transition in 2027

The experienced engineer, personally selected by Valentino Rossi in 2020, will lead the factory garage alongside Martin’s trusted mechanic as Yamaha restructures its technical lineup for a new era.

As the 2026 MotoGP season progresses, the paddock’s focus has increasingly shifted toward the 2027 grid, with teams finalizing not only rider lineups but also the critical technical structures that will support them. In one of the most significant behind-the-scenes moves confirmed this week, Yamaha has appointed David Munoz as crew chief for incoming factory rider Jorge Martin. The decision underscores the Japanese manufacturer’s deliberate strategy to accelerate Martin’s adaptation to the M1 and signal a renewed commitment to returning to championship contention.

A Strategic Appointment for a New Era

Martin’s arrival at Yamaha marks a pivotal moment for the Iwata-based marque. After securing the 2024 world title with Pramac Ducati and spending two seasons developing the Aprilia RS-GP, Martin was identified as the ideal successor to Fabio Quartararo, who departed for Honda. Recognizing that integrating a new champion requires more than just talent, Yamaha has prioritized pairing him with an engineer who possesses deep institutional knowledge and proven premier-class experience.

David Munoz, distinct from the Moto3 rider of the same name, currently serves as Alex Rins’ crew chief but has been a fixture in Yamaha’s factory garage since 2020. His appointment carries particular weight given his pedigree: he was personally selected by Valentino Rossi to replace long-time crew chief Silvano Galbusera as the nine-time world champion entered the final chapter of his career. Before joining Yamaha, Munoz had worked within the VR46 setup in Moto2, giving him a unique blend of grassroots development experience and top-tier factory expertise.

Yamaha’s choice signals confidence that Munoz can bridge the gap between Martin’s aggressive riding style and the M1’s distinct characteristics. With the 2027 regulations introducing the new 850cc formula, having a crew chief who understands both Yamaha’s engineering philosophy and the demands of a reigning champion could prove decisive in minimizing the adaptation period.

Building Martin’s Technical Ecosystem

While Munoz will oversee strategic and engineering decisions, Martin will not be navigating the transition alone. The Spaniard is bringing his trusted chief mechanic, David Galacho affectionately known in the paddock as “Malaguita,” who has accompanied him from Pramac to Aprilia and now to Yamaha. This continuity ensures that Martin retains a familiar voice in the garage, providing stability amid the broader organizational changes.

On the opposite side of the Yamaha garage, Ai Ogura is expected to inherit Diego Gubellini as his crew chief. Gubellini has served as Quartararo’s engineer throughout the Frenchman’s tenure, meaning Ogata will benefit from extensive recent experience with the M1 platform. This pairing creates a balanced technical structure: one side focused on integrating a proven champion, the other on nurturing emerging talent with established factory knowledge.

Paddock-Wide Technical Reshuffling

Yamaha’s move is part of a broader wave of technical realignments across MotoGP as teams prepare for 2027. Several key appointments have already been confirmed or are nearing finalization:

  • Ducati Lenovo Team: Pedro Acosta will work with Cristian Gabarrini as he transitions from KTM, ensuring the young Spaniard has elite-level support aboard the GP27.

  • VR46 Racing: Fermin Aldeguer is set to be paired with Massimo Branchini (currently Di Giannantonio’s crew chief), while Nicolo Bulega is expected to work with Matteo Flamigni, another veteran of Rossi’s technical circle who currently oversees Franco Morbidelli.

  • Gresini Ducati: Joan Mir will reunite with Frankie Carchedi, the crew chief with whom he won the 2020 world championship at Suzuki a partnership that proved highly successful and could reignite Mir’s competitiveness. David Holgado is anticipated to take over Alex Marquez’s current crew chief, Donatello Giovanotti.

  • KTM & Pending Decisions: Alex Marquez’s move to the factory KTM team still lacks a confirmed crew chief, as does Fabio Di Giannantonio’s technical lineup. These remaining pieces are expected to be resolved before the winter testing ban begins.

The Stakes for Yamaha

For Yamaha, the 2027 season represents more than a regulatory reset; it is a chance to redefine their competitive identity after years of struggling against Ducati and Aprilia. Martin’s signing was a statement of intent, but the appointment of Munoz reveals the depth of planning behind that statement. By combining fresh championship-winning talent with seasoned engineering leadership, Yamaha is laying the groundwork to ensure Martin’s transition is as seamless as possible.

In a sport where margins are measured in thousandths of a second, the relationship between rider and crew chief often determines whether potential translates into podiums. With Munoz at the helm, Yamaha has signaled that they are not merely acquiring a champion; they are building the environment in which he can thrive.
