BMW has unveiled a new electric concept car at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas called the “i Vision Dee”. The car is covered in a futuristic film made of electronic paper and has the ability to change its color on demand. According to BMW, this is the world’s first “color-changing” car. It can cycle between 32 different solid exterior colors with mix-and-match capabilities due to its 240 different panel segments. This is a significant improvement from the earlier iteration showcased last year which could only alternate between black, white, and gray.

BMW sees this car as a glimpse of what the future could be like, where cars can change their color on demand. The company says that the Dee, which stands for “Digital Emotional Experience”, allows for an almost infinite variety of patterns to be generated and varied within seconds. However, the technology behind the car’s color-changing capabilities is still in its infancy and it could take years before it becomes widely available for consumers.

The car’s outer skin is a film made of electronic paper built by a startup called E Ink, which also makes display tech for e-readers and mobile phones. The coating segments contain millions of tiny microcapsules with different color pigments that change shades when electricity is applied. The electronic coating is “ultra-low power,” so changing the car’s colors won’t drain the electric vehicle’s battery.

While the technology behind the car’s color-changing capabilities is still in its infancy, BMW hopes to develop a spray coating that will help the high-tech panels to perform in the real world. Exposure to the elements in day-to-day driving, from car washes to flying insects, can keep the high-tech panels from performing in the real world. BMW aims to solve this issue and eventually make the technology available for consumers.

BMW has not released any information about the car’s engine or battery, but the company claims that the car is loaded with futuristic hardware and software that will be available in cars on the road by 2025. This includes BMW’s Head-Up display, a digital dashboard that spans the entire width of the windshield. The car also features a Mixed Reality Slider, a touchscreen that allows drivers to control how much digital content is displayed on the dashboard, from driving speed and battery range to music controls and text messages.

The “Neue Klasse” line of cars, set to debut in two years, will feature both the Head-Up display and the Mixed Reality Slider. However, the color-changing technology is unlikely to be available to consumers in the near future, due to the challenges of exposure to the elements.

E Ink, the company that developed the electronic paper skin for the Dee, says that it’s able to manufacture its panels in any shape imaginable, potentially leading to applications like e-reader screens that mimic the look of actual paper or more energy-efficient digital signs and smartwatch displays.

In conclusion, BMW’s “i Vision Dee” concept car is an innovative and impressive technological feat that could lead to a much more colorful future for cars. While the technology behind the car’s color-changing capabilities is still in its infancy, the car is loaded with futuristic hardware and software that will be available in cars on the road by 2025. The “Neue Klasse” line of cars, set to debut in two years, will feature some of this technology. However, the color-changing technology may take some time before it can become widely available for consumers. E Ink’s electronic paper technology has the potential to be used in a variety of other applications, making it an exciting development in the world of technology.
