Road trips are the best when the sun is shining bright and your travel plans are on the run. Sometimes road trips can take a sudden U-turn because of accidents. It’s a disaster, not only the car is totaled but what are the chances that you will survive?

It can happen to anyone, even to the best of the drivers at any time. It's not about speeding only; in fact, you might not be over speeding at all and still find yourself in a grubby situation. Even the most attentive and responsible driver can be in an accident. What are the chances to be involved in car accidents in the UK? Sky-high, with high rise traffic and busy metropolitan areas, one can lose focus due to several reasons.

Car accidents are stressful enough and to consider one that may happen during the pandemic can blow up your mind. Whether it’s a taxi ride or your car, the experience is definitely overwhelming, stressful and gets confusing quickly. It’s been almost 8 weeks of lockdown in the UK, so it's safe to say that auto accidents have a significant decrease but now things might change once the lockdown starts to wear people down.

To fight through all the auto drama and the killer wave of pandemic there’s a lot you need to consider. Down below are some useful tips to handle a car accident in unprecedented times;

Keep critical information at hand at all times

When you plan a road trip from Oxford to Stansted it’s a must to keep all basic documents with you. If you have forgotten where you put your insurance information, now might be the time to hunt for it.

It’s better to stay safe than sorry right? Besides the insurance papers, keep your medical information in dashboard too (if driving in a rental) and all the basic information like; your name, age, list of medication, allergies, etc. even the minutest of information can be lifesaving.

Cover your Travel Insurance

Because of the pandemic, various coverage is given to travelers who are still stuck in the UK or foreign lands. Even Americans, who love to travel, had to cancel their trips.

Have an insurance plan like Named Perils – the most common travel insurance and least expensive( with 7% to 9% cost) at hand which covers accidents or certain pandemic hazards involved in travelling (especially in international travel) it also includes injuries and a certain list of illnesses besides COVID-19.

Keep up with the Essentials

If it's imperative to avoid road travel due to some work or family reason than stocking your car with essentials can prove to be real handy. It will not only reduce the stress of pandemic but give you a little modicum of self-satisfaction too. If anything goes down during your journey you would know you are prepared.

Essentials like disinfectants, cleaning agents, disinfecting wipes, face masks, face coverings, gloves, pen, paper, or even a taser must accessorize your car. Or make sure even the ride you booked for a road trip is covering such essentials.

Place essentials at Arm’s Length

This part might be tricky but if you found yourself in a car accident, you will need to dial 999 immediately even if you do not suffer from injury but the other auto driver might. Put your mobile phone in console, a sanitizer, some wipes, or even a torch (if you are travelling at night). To make sure any of these items do not fall, use a binder.

Oh and most importantly, keep your documents in a neat pile and maybe some light covering to keep them safe from wear and tear.

Maintain the Distance

Until the paramedics arrive, keep your distance from the third person, this is your safest bet. Just because you drove from one place to another doesn’t mean you need to forgo social distancing.

Keep a safe distance (at least 6 feet) and use the pen and paper that you kept earlier in the essential things (see it does come handy) to communicate. This way if you are unable to speak due to the trauma you can write down the emergency contact number and hand it over to the medical officer who is assisting the accident scene and vice versa.

Memorize phone numbers or at least keep a list with you

The pen and papers remind us of one most important thing; the phone numbers. In chaotic conditions, it’s easy to panic and feels confused. Use your memory to memorize important phone numbers.

For instance, if you were traveling on your own, let's say from Oxford to Stansted and meaning to reach the airport on time you can call a taxi ride or a roadside assistance company too to make it on time for the flight. So keep your emergency contact numbers, hospital or police station numbers at hand for a road crisis.
