Understanding Motorcycle Fairing Kits and Their Purpose

Explore motorcycle fairing types, materials, fitment, and replacement options for sport bikes, touring motorcycles, and restoration projects.

A motorcycle's fairing kit contributes significantly to its bodywork; yet often riders only consider the look (paint finish) of the fairings. Fairings do perform other functions such as streamlining airflow over the motorcycle, providing coverage of mechanical components, and helping to hold the overall structure of the motorcycle together. There is a fairing kit available for sport bikes, touring bikes and street motorcycles. Each specific type of motorcycle has a matching style of fairing kit and purpose for how they will be used.

A typical motorcycle fairing kit includes several body panels made specifically for a certain bike model and production year. A full kit may come with side fairings, a front nose section, lower belly panels, a tail section, front fender, tank cover, and sometimes a seat cowl. Some kits may also include a windscreen or heat protection panels for areas close to the engine or exhaust.

A standard set of motorcycle fairings usually has many individual fairing parts that fit just one type and year of motorcycle. Each whole kit will have the minimal amount of body panels (at least 1) and they will include: side fairing (R and L), front fairing (nose section), lower side fairings/belly panels, tail fairing, front fender, fuel tank cover, possibly seat cowling (or rear fender), windscreen (if applicable), and possibly some type of insulating sheeting (heat shield) for all areas of the motorcycle where there's an engine/exhaust that is in extreme proximity to body panels.

Fairings can also provide basic protection for crucial components of a motorcycle. Fairings can help to shield various parts including radiators, frames, wires and engines from elements such as dust, water and small pieces of debris found on the road. Although fairings are not specifically made to protect the motorcycle from the impacts associated with crashes, they will help to limit direct exposure to the elements from daily riding conditions.

Many riders choose to replace fairings, especially after minor accidents, falling over in a parking lot, or tipping over at a low speed. Some of the most common damage experienced by riders include cracked fairings, broken mounting tabs and scrapes on the paint. Some riders replace just the damaged parts while others will replace all of the fairings with a full fairing kit to provide their bike with a brand new appearance.

Replacement due to sun damage is a common issue. Many bicycles that have been parked outside for long periods will start losing their lustre off the paint and finish will begin to fade after time. Even the best paint does not hold up in hot climates with high levels of UV exposure for very long.

Older motorcycles are also a popular choice when searching for fairings. While the motorbike may still run as well as it did when it was new, there is a good chance that the bodywork has become faded, mismatched or looks outdated/old. Installing a new fairing kit can quickly give a motorcycle a makeover.

When searching for aftermarket fairings, many motorcyclists will have a similar experience regarding auctmarts fairing kits (who are noted for their ABS plastic bodywork ) compared to OEM-type fairing kits. The majority of buyers are most interested in the accuracy of fitment vs quality of paint used on the fairings and whether the particular fairing kit includes all components needed for completion of installation process prior to selecting one over another.

There are several different styles of fairings - Full fairings cover most of the motorcycle's front and side. Commonly found on sport bikes, they cover the engine, leaving just a small area around the engine open for aerodynamics. Half fairings, on the other hand, only cover the upper part of the bike, so the engine is not covered. Quarter fairings are smaller than half and mostly change the front of the bike around the headlight area. Belly pans are the lower part of the bike that rests below the engine and usually are added for appearance and to help with aerodynamics.

Choosing the material for fairing is also important. ABS plastic is the most popular material for street motorcycle fairings due to its combination of strength and flexibility. It is also able to withstand vibrations and daily use better than other less expensive types of plastic. Fiberglass fairings are often used on race motorcycles because they are significantly lighter than other types of fairings; however, fiberglass fairings are much more susceptible to cracking. Finally, carbon fiber is typically used on high-end or custom-built motorcycles because it is light and strong, providing maximum weight savings and performance.

Experienced aftermarket manufacturers of fairings (including some manufacturers of aftermarket fairing products such as auctmarts) often utilize injection-molded ABS plastic for the production of their fairings. Using this process provides a more consistent shape and fit, improving the accuracy of mounting and allowing riders to install their fairings more easily.

When purchasing fairings, Fitment is probably the most important consideration. Even minor differences in model year or trim can affect the fitment of fairing panels, so it's necessary for riders to verify compatibility before purchasing their kits.

Many other things while purchasing fairing kits can be deemed "high priority" as well since they affect the quality of paint and appearance of the final product. A quality fairing kit should feature an even amount of coverage across all parts and a proper clear coat to protect these parts from damage through scratches.

Heat protection should also be taken into account when purchasing fairing kits since some fairing panels are located directly beside the engine and exhaust. To combat damage from heat, many manufacturers supply all-inclusive heat shields with their fairing kits to guard against overheating caused by engine temperatures or stop-and-go traffic.

Fitting fairings takes time; similarly, many motorcyclists will begin by taking all of the fairing parts out of the box and placing them together to compare what they have against their previous original bodywork. Also for the initial installation of fairings, we like to keep the bolts slightly loose at the outset so that all panels can be aligned as they will be ultimately tightened.

If you are not confident in performing the installation yourself, a local motorcycle shop can help you with that. There are also many people who prefer to perform the installation at home with just some basic tools and careful alignment.

Overall, when correctly fitted, motorcycle fairing kits can improve how the bike looks and performs. An example of performance over appearance is that it can direct airflow around the motorcycle better than if the fairing were not fitted and, in addition, can help protect vulnerable motorcycle components from damage from use. When a motorcyclist restores and/or upgrades their motorcycle, choosing the appropriate fairings will not only enhance the appearance of the motorcycle, but also the usability of the motorcycle.
