In the modern age, no one can say that I am not using an automobile vehicle. Everyone uses vehicles and other gear-driven technology to minimise time. We can say that Gears are the soul of the automotive industry.

What Is A Gear?

A gear is a machine component in which teeth are cut around cone-shaped or cylindrical surfaces with even spacing. By meshing a combination of these elements, they transmit rotations and forces from the driving shaft to the driven shaft. Gears can be classified by shape as cycloidal, trochoidal and involute gears. Also, they can be classified by shaft places as intersecting shaft gears, non-parallel and non-intersecting shaft gears and parallel shaft gears. The past of gears is old, and gears already develop in ancient Greece in B.C. in Archimedes' writing.

Now we will know about the types of gears in the world used for the automotive industry.

Types Of Gears

There are many gears, such as spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, worm gears, gear rack, etc. These can be widely classified by looking at axes such as parallel shafts, intersecting shafts and non-intersecting shafts.

There are several types of gears used in the automotive industry, but we will learn about some of them.

1. Spur Gear

Cylindrical gears have cylindrical pitch surfaces. Spur gears refer to the parallel shaft gear assembly and are cylindrical gears, including a tooth line that is parallel to the shaft and straight. Spur gears are the widely used gears that can achieve high accuracy with moderately easy production processes. They have the quality of having no pressure in the axial direction (thrust load). The larger of the meshing pair is named the gear, and the smaller is called the pinion.

Spur Gears used in industrial equipment to transfer mechanical motion and control power, torque and speed. These simple gears are durable, reliable, cost-effective and provide a positive, constant speed drive to promote daily industrial operations.

2. Helical Gear

Helical gears have parallel shafts similar to spur gears and are cylindrical gears with winding tooth lines. They have better teeth meshing than spur gears, have superior quietness, and transmit higher loads, making them suitable for high-speed applications. Helical gears create thrust force in the axial direction, necessitating thrust bearings. Helical gears are manufactured with the right hand and left-hand twist, requiring opposite hand gears for a meshing pair.

Helical gear is the regularly used gear in transmissions. They also generate vast amounts of thrust and utilise bearings to improve support the thrust load. Helical gears can adjust the rotation angle up to 90 degrees when mounted on perpendicular shafts. This gear is used in automotive vehicles such as tractors, trucks and others. The superior quality helical gears used in Ashok Leyland Truck that's why this truck works smoothly.

3. Gear Rack

This gear is a cylindrical gear with the pitch cylinder's radius being infinite. The gear rack has the same sized and shaped teeth cut at equal distances along a flat surface or a straight rod. By agreeing with a cylindrical gear pinion, it transforms rotational motion into linear motion. Gear racks broadly divided into straight tooth racks and helical tooth racks, but both have straight tooth lines. By machining the ends of gear racks, it is possible to connect gear racks end to end.

The rack and pinion gear's two main functions are conversions of the steering wheel's rotational transformation into the linear motion required for the vehicle's wheels to rotate. Moderation of gears, which makes it easier for the steering wheel to turn the wheels.

4. Bevel Gear

Bevel gears have a cone-shaped manner and are used to transfer force between two shafts that meet at one point. A bevel gear has a cone as its pitch exterior, and its teeth are cut onward the cone. Kinds of bevel gears hold helical bevel gears, spiral bevel gears, miter gears, straight bevel gears, angular bevel gears, hypoid gears, crown gears and zero bevel gears.

Bevel gears are used in differential drives, transmitting power to two axles spinning at different speeds, such as those on a cornering automobile—bevel gears used as the primary mechanism for a hand drill.

5. Spiral Bevel Gear

Spiral bevel gears are bevelled gears with bowed tooth lines. Due to the higher tooth connection ratio, they are excellent for straight bevel gears in efficiency, noise, strength and vibration. On the other hand, they are more challenging to perform. Also, because the teeth are bowed, they cause thrust forces in the axial direction. Within the spiral bevel gears, the one with zero twisting angles is called zero bevel gear. Spiral Bevel Gear used in transmission between steering wheel and wheels.
