A tractor is an essential need for every farmer. It uses for various purposes like farming, industrial, construction, etc. Tractors offer many features, which made it useful. A tractor consists of many qualities or features such as clutch, transmission, steering, etc.

Major Features of New Holland Tractor

Here, we show the main features of the New Holland tractor for farmers. Check out below.

Clutch

A Clutch connects and disconnects the engine from transmission gears and driving wheels. Clutch transmits power using friction between driven members and driving members.

Features of a good clutch

  • It can transmit maximum power without slipping.
  • It has a good ability to take the load without dragging.
  • The control by hand lever and the pedal lever should be easy.

Types of Clutch

There are three types of clutch:-

  • Friction Clutch
  • Dog Clutch
  • Fluid Coupling

Friction Clutch

By utilizing the frictional force, the friction clutch produces gripping action between two surfaces. To transmit power these surfaces pressed together. While starting the engine, the clutch pedal is depressed. The clutch pedal is slowly released on frictional surfaces to increase the pressure until there is no slip, after the engine starts. The transmission of power depends on the force intensity and friction member's material used to press them together.

Friction Clutch is Two types:

Single disc clutch or single plate clutch - There is only one plate clutch.

Multi-disc clutch or multi-plate clutch - It has received several thin metal plates, arranged alternately for driving and operating as driven members.

Dog clutch

Dog clutch having square jaws used to drive the shaft in either direction. It is a simple clutch and mostly used in power tillers.

Fluid coupling

Fluid coupling consists of driving members and driven members. An impeller with radial vanes made the driving member and a runner with radial vanes made the driven member.

The main features of fluid coupling are

  • Absorption of shock and vibration
  • Smooth starting
  • Easy operation

Transmission Gears and Torque Converter Gear

An engine of a tractor runs at high speed, but the New Holland tractor's rear wheels require higher torque and low speed. So, it becomes very important to decrease the engine's speed and increase torque at the rear wheels.

Gears are two types:-

  • Selective sliding type
  • Constant-mesh type

Torque Converter is also called hydro-kinetic transmission. It uses for transmitting power and multiplying engine torque. It works as a torque multiplier.

Differential Unit and Final Drive

Differential unit is an arrangement of the gearbox to allow one of the rear wheels to rotate faster or slower than others. The inner wheel has to travel a lesser path than the outer wheel while turning the tractor in a curved way. The inner wheel requires less power as compared to the outer wheel. A differential unit fulfills this condition. This unit permits one of the New Holland tractors to move faster than other wheels at a turning point.

The Final drive is a gear reduction unit in power trains. The Final drive transmits the power finally to the rear axle and the wheels.

Steering System and Brake Steering System

The steering system is governing the angular movement of the front wheels of the tractor. This system reduces the effort of turning the front wheels.

Steering System consist:-

  1. The Steering Wheel
  2. Steering shaft
  3. Steering gear
  4. Drop arm
  5. Drag link
  6. Steering arm
  7. Tie rod
  8. Kingpin

When the user turns the steering wheel, the motion transmits to the drop arm's angular motion through the steering shaft.

Brakes protect operators from accidents by controlling tractor speed. It operated by two independent pedals and mounted on the driving axle. Brakes work on friction’s principle.

Brakes are two types.

  • Mechanical brake
  • Hydraulic brake

5. Hydraulic Control System

It is the mechanism of a tractor to lift or hold the mounted and semi-mounted equipment. New Holland tractor equipped with a hydraulic controlling system for operating a three-point hitch.

Precautions for the hydraulic control system

  • Farmers should use the correct grade of oil in the tractor.
  • The oil tank should be full.
  • Farmers should check all the nuts and bolts of the tractor tightened well.
  • At a regular interval, the filter should check.

6. Hitch and Control Board of Tractor

For effective and efficient operation of the tractor, implements need to hitch properly. Implements can be trailed, mounted, or semi-mounted.

There are two types of hitch

  • Drawbar hitch
  • Three-point hitch

7. Power Take-Off Unit (PTO)

It is part of the transmission system and consists of a shaft, shield, and cover. The shaft is externally split to transmit torsional power to a machine.

8. Belt Pulley

Belt pulley transmits the power from the tractor to machines through a belt. It is suitable to operate threshers, pumps, cutters, and other machines. The belt pulley is placed either on the left, right, or rear side of the New Holland tractor.

9. Control Board or Dashboard of a Tractor

The Control board consist of

  • Throttle Lever - It increases and decreases engine speed.
  • Decompression Lever - It releases compression pressure from the combustion chamber of the engine. The decompression lever helps to start the engine.
  • Hour Meter - It shows engine RPM and the engine hour.
  • Light switch - it is for light points only.
  • Horn Hutton - Horn of the tractor.
  • Battery Charging Indicator - changing and discharging of the battery.
  • Oil Pressure Indicator - it indicates lubricating oil pressure in the system.
  • Water Temperature Gauge - It indicated the temperature of the water of the cooling system.

10. Tractor Tyre and Front Axle

The tractor tyres available in many sizes with the ply ratings, such as 2,6 or 8. Ply ratings indicate the comparative strength of tyres. The rating high, tyres are stronger.

Front-wheel mounted on the front axle. It is an idler wheel by which the tractor steered in various directions.

Various adjustments of the front axle

  • Toe-in
  • Caster angle
  • Camber angle
