An electric scooter wheel is arguably the most important component of an e-scooter. You're going nowhere without them. Unfortunately, tires do not endure forever and occasionally run flat or become punctured. While not all top e-scooters are the same, most similarly replace an electric wheel. So, if you're wondering how to change a wheel and electric scooter tire, let us show you how.

Different Types of Electric Scooter Tires

There are two types to consider when replacing electric scooter tires: air-filled and solid tires. Furthermore, you may have honeycomb tires, but for the sake of this blog, they should be considered conventional solid tires. Another vital DIY tip to remember if your scooter isn't starting is how to change the ignition switch.

Pneumatic Tubed

On electric scooters, air-filled tires are the most prevalent kind of tire. They are regarded as the best because they offer a strong grip and perform well at absorbing shocks and vibrations.

Since air-filled tires are used on various other vehicles, such as bikes, motorcycles, and cars, you are likely already familiar with them. But not everyone is created equal. They are less expensive and simpler to replace than tubeless tires.

No-Tube Pneumatic

Like automobiles, a tubeless electric scooter wheel has a substantial external wall forming an airtight seal with the hub's rim. They are more durable than those with inner tubes, but they are more difficult to fix if you have a flat.

Without an inner tube, tubeless tires are pneumatic tires that store air in a vacuum surrounding the rim. Tire sealant may repair minor punctures, and these tires are more resilient than tubed tires.

Strong Solid Tires

A type of electric scooter, known as a solid tire, is constructed entirely of rubber or is filled with polyurethane foam. A pneumatic tire is simpler to replace than a solid tire. However, you won't need to worry about it as frequently compared to an air-filled tire.

Pneumatic tires can be just as durable as solid tires. They won't ever lose air pressure after being pierced. They are frequently composed of hard plastics, though, and because of their greater rolling friction, they will deteriorate more quickly.

Tire Size and Motor Power of an Electric Scooter Are Correlated

Motor power increases along with tire size.

Since the scooter's wheels have motors mounted inside, the motor's size is reflected in the size of the tire. For example, a low-cost scooter with a 36V 350W engine might only have 8.5-inch tires, whereas an ultra-performance scooter with 72V 2000W motors might have 11-inch tires. In the end, the bigger the tires, the stronger the motor/s.

This is why the scooter community quickly classifies performance by referring to various models according to their tire size.

Can I Switch to a Different Brand of Tires?

As long as the replacement tires are the right size, you can switch your scooter's tires for ones from a different brand. Since most scooter tire manufacturers use standard sizing, finding the right replacement should be simple.

How Far Do the Tires on an Electric Scooter Last?

Expert data shows that the average tire life of an electric scooter is between 1,500 and 3,000 kilometers. But it depends on how well you care for them, how often you use them, and how you ride.

When Should You Change the Tire on an Electric Scooter?

Unlike automobile tires, an electric scooter wheel is not required to have a minimum tread depth by law. As a result, depending on their condition, you should change your tires.

How to Replace a Wheel on an Electric Scooter?

Replacement procedures change slightly depending on the type of electric scooter wheel. You could want the assistance of a professional from outside, depending on the type of wheel, whether it is a 3 wheel electric scooter or a one wheel electric scooter. However, the tools used by each technique are essentially the same. You can follow the instructions for each kind of e-scooter tire in the procedures below.

Remember that not all scooter kinds require the same steps to replace the tire, as you will see when comparing an electric scooter with a big wheel electric scooter. Check out our instructions on how to carry an electric scooter as well; it will simplify your life. Learning how to fix the electric scooter's brakes would also be a good idea while you have the tools available.

How to Replace an E-Scooter Tubeless Wheel?

In doing so, you need these materials, safety gloves, an air compressor with a minimum pressure of 120 PSI, at least two tire pry bars, and a screwdriver.

STEP 1 REMOVE THE WHEEL FROM E-SCOOTER

Several screws are typically used to secure an e-scooter wheel in place. Usually, stickers or rubber stoppers are used to conceal them. Once found, they often emerge rather quickly but are surprisingly lengthy.

STEP 2 FULLY DEFLATE THE TIRE IF NOT COMPLETELY FLAT

After this crucial phase, the old tire will become more malleable and simpler to remove from the rim.

STEP 3 REMOVE THE TIRE BY HAND FROM THE RIM

This is similar to massaging your tire. Follow the tire and apply pressure to the joint where the tire and rim meet. In the following stage, inserting our tire pry bars as a result will be simpler.

STEP 4 REMOVE THE TIRE OFF THE RIM USING TIRE PRY BARS.

With tire pry bars, you can remove the tire off the rim more forcefully. Lift a section of the tire away from the rim using the first tire pry. Use the second tire pry as additional leverage to raise more of the tire away from the rim. You can manually remove the remaining tire once roughly a third has been removed.

STEP 5 GET THE NEW TIRE READY FOR AN EASIER INSTALL

To make our new tire more malleable and simpler to mount on the rim of our E-scooter, we will heat it and treat it with dish soap in this step. You can select one of the three methods to heat your tire but be aware that doing so should only be done as a last resort if all other methods fail.

  • a. Cleanse in the Sink With Hot Water
  • b. The tire is heated in hot water.
  • c. Tire heating in a microwave

STEP 6 ROTATE THE TIRE TO INCREASE FLEXIBILITY

Wear safety gloves when handling the new tire because it will still be hot from the previous procedure. To make the tire as flexible as possible, simply rotate it back and forth.

STEP 7 SLIDE THE NEW TIRE UPON THE RIM

Attaching the tire's first side to the electric scooter should not take long. The second side of the tire can be particularly difficult to install, so enlist the assistance of a buddy or use your foot to hold down the first side of the tire as you press it over the remaining portion of the rim. The tire pry bars can also be used, but you should not harm the tire.

STEP 8 SEAL THE TIRE WITH THE AIR COMPRESSOR

Use a brief burst of air to seal the tire once it is attached to the stem. Once the tire has been patched and is holding air, you can lower the air pressure to 50 to 60 PSI.

STEP 9 REINSTALL THE TIRE

How to Change a Solid Electric Scooter Wheel?

STEP 1 REMOVE THE TIRE FROM THE E-SCOOTER

An electric scooter wheel is normally secured in place by a few screws. They are typically covered with stickers or rubber stoppers. They typically emerge rapidly after being discovered, yet they are remarkably long.

STEP 2 REMOVE THE TIRE BY HAND FROM THE RIM

Just use gentle pressure to massage the tire away from the rim, moving down the edge until you have finished the entire wheel.

STEP 3 REMOVE THE TIRE OFF THE RIM USING TIRE PRY BARS

Even while working in pairs makes the activity go more quickly, it is still possible to finish it by yourself. With the first tire pry, raise a part of the tire away from the rim first. Then, yank more of the tire away from the rim with the second tire pry. Once you've taken about a third of the tire off, you should be able to take the rest off by hand.

STEP 4 GET THE NEW TIRE READY FOR EASIER INSTALLATION

This step will warm up our new tire and rub it with dish soap to make it much more malleable and easier to install on the rim of our E-scooter. You should heat your tire using one of the three techniques outlined above, but keep in mind that utilizing the microwave as a last resort may jeopardize the life of your new tire.

STEP 5 TURN THE TIRE FOR MORE FLEXIBILITY

Wear gloves when handling the new tire because it will be warm from the previous section. Simply bend the tire back and forth to make it as flexible as possible.

STEP 6 SLIDE THE TIRE ONTO THE RIM

You should be able to install the first side pretty quickly. Next, enlist a buddy's assistance or use your foot to hold down the first side while pressing the tire over the remainder of the rim. You may also pry the tire using the tire pry bars.

STEP 7 REINSTALL THE E-SCOOTER TIRE

Reinstall the screws from step one and align your wheel.
