Sick of Hiluxes? Here Are the Most Interesting Cars You Can Actually Buy in Malaysia Right Now
Malaysia has more car options than ever and most Malaysians are still buying the same five models. Here's a scouting report for everyone else.

Here is something nobody at a Malaysian car showroom will ever tell you, the most interesting vehicles you can buy right now are almost never the ones in the brochure rack. They're hiding in corners of Mudah.my, in grey import lots in Shah Alam, in Facebook Marketplace listings with three blurry photos and a seller who responds only between 9 and 11pm. I've been down these rabbit holes so you don't have to or, more accurately, so you can go down them yourself with slightly better information. This is not a list of the best cars you can buy in Malaysia. This is a list of the most interesting ones. There's a difference, and it matters.

Suzuki Jimny (JB74) โ New
From RM148,000
Officially Available
4WD
Cult Classic
Let's start with the one that needs no introduction but always gets one anyway because the Jimny deserves every word written about it. In a market drowning in bloated family SUVs that couldn't find traction on a gravel road if their warranty depended on it, the Jimny is the rare thing: a proper, honest, body-on-frame 4WD that weighs under 1,100kg and costs less than a fully loaded Proton X90.
It has a ladder frame, a low-range transfer case, and solid axles. On paper those sound like compromises. On a fire road in Gua Musang at 6am, they sound like the entire point. The highway manners are not exactly effortless it is narrow, it is light, and crosswinds on the PLUS will remind you of this but for what the Jimny is designed to do, it is essentially without equal at its price point. The waiting list, at certain dealers, stretches to several months. That tells you everything you need to know about how Malaysians actually feel about it when nobody is pretending to be sensible.
๐๏ธ
Take it to Endau-Rompin. Take it up the logging roads behind Janda Baik. Take it anywhere a Myvi would surrender and a Fortuner would feel excessive. It belongs outdoors.

Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series โ Used
RM40,000 โ RM85,000
Used Market
Legend
4WD
The 80-series Land Cruiser is one of those vehicles that automotive culture has elevated to near-mythological status and for once, the legend is entirely earned. Built between 1990 and 1997, the 80 is widely regarded as the purest expression of what a Land Cruiser should be: indestructible, capable of crossing continents, and possessed of a solidity that makes modern SUVs feel like they were assembled from cardboard and good intentions.
In Malaysia, clean examples are genuinely becoming rare. The ones that have survived decades of tropical heat, kampung roads, and enthusiastic previous owners are the ones worth hunting down. Prices range from bargain-priced rough examples needing work, to clean well-kept units that hold their value stubbornly and deservedly. The 1FZ-FE petrol engine is bulletproof. The 1HD diesel variant harder to find but worth the effort is the version overlanders globally swear by.
This is not a weekend toy. This is a vehicle you could drive from KL to the Thai border, turn left into nowhere, and trust completely. Very few modern SUVs at any price can make that claim with the same conviction.
๐ง
Budget for a proper pre-purchase inspection and any deferred maintenance. A well-sorted 80-series is a long-term relationship, not a transaction treat it accordingly and it will outlast everything else in your neighbourhood.

Mitsubishi Triton Athlete 4x4 โ New
From RM102,000
Officially Available
Pick-Up
Value Pick
Before you skip this one because it sounds like the sensible option hear me out. The new Triton is genuinely, surprisingly good in a way that has caught even committed Hilux loyalists off guard. The 2.4L diesel is smooth and tractable, the interior has made a genuine leap in quality from the previous generation, and the 4WD system is proper rather than cosmetic. At RM102,000 for the Athlete variant, it significantly undercuts the equivalent Hilux and Ranger while giving up very little in real-world capability.
What makes it interesting rather than merely sensible is everything it does beyond the spec sheet. The Triton has always been a better off-road truck than its sales figures suggest the Super Select 4WD system is one of the most versatile setups in the segment, allowing 4WD use on tarmac without the drama that plagues some rivals. Pair it with an aftermarket lift and some decent rubber and you have a genuinely capable machine for under RM120,000 all-in. That is a compelling argument.
๐ก
The smart buy in the pickup truck segment right now especially if you're tempted by a Hilux but wincing at the price. The Triton is no longer the consolation prize. It's the considered choice.

Volkswagen Beetle โ Used
RM45,000 โ RM70,000
Used Market
Character Car
Weekend Driver
Volkswagen killed the Beetle in 2019 and the world is still not over it. The modern Beetle the A5 generation, built from 2011 to 2019 is now entering the sweet spot of the used car market: old enough to be affordable, young enough to be reliable, and distinctive enough that you will never mistake it for anything else in a car park.
In Malaysia, used Beetles are available through platforms like Carsome and Mudah.my at prices that make genuine sense. The 1.2 TSI engine is economical and adequately peppy for city use. The interior is characterful in the way that mass-market cars have entirely stopped being characterful. And the reaction you will get from people when you pull up in one the smiles, the pointing, the "eh, Beetle lah!" is worth something that no amount of crossover practicality can replicate.
This is not a car you buy because it makes sense. It is a car you buy because life is short and driving something with a flower vase holder built into the dashboard is its own reward.
๐ป
Check the DSG gearbox service history carefully on any used example. Otherwise, this is one of the most smile-inducing purchases you can make in the Malaysian used car market right now.

Isuzu D-Max Stealth 4x4 โ Used
RM60,000 โ RM80,000
Used Market
Pick-Up
Underrated
The D-Max Stealth is the pickup truck that serious off-road enthusiasts have quietly been recommending to each other for years while the rest of Malaysia was busy queuing for Hilux test drives. The Stealth trim black accents, blacked-out grille, aggressive stance looks the part without the premium that Hilux dealers charge for the equivalent Rogue variant. More importantly, the 1.9L Blue Power diesel engine is genuinely impressive: cleaner, more fuel-efficient than you'd expect, and with enough torque to handle plantation roads and boat ramps with equal composure.
Used examples particularly from Sabah and Sarawak, where the D-Max has always outsold the Hilux represent some of the best value in the Malaysian used truck market. A well-maintained 2020 D-Max Stealth at RM60,000 is a better proposition than many new vehicles at twice the price. The Isuzu community here is active, parts are accessible, and the trucks simply last. Sometimes the underrated choice is underrated for no good reason at all.
The pickup truck the algorithm never recommends and enthusiasts always do. If your Hilux budget is RM80,000, spend RM60,000 on a D-Max Stealth and use the rest for a proper rooftop tent and a set of AT tyres.

Proton Saga โ New (Hear Me Out)
From RM38,000
Officially Available
National Car
Pure Driving Fun
Stay with me on this one. The Proton Saga is not a glamorous entry on any list of interesting cars. It is a sub-RM40,000 national sedan that Malaysians treat as a default rather than a choice. And yet the manual gearbox variant of the Saga is one of the most genuinely enjoyable driving experiences available in Malaysia at any price under RM80,000.
At 1,050kg, the Saga manual is light. The 1.3L engine makes modest power, but modest power in a modest weight feels lively in a way that a 2.0L crossover pushing 1,600kg never quite manages. The steering is honest. The gearbox is short and mechanical. On a quiet B-road in Negeri Sembilan early on a Sunday morning, with nothing pressing and nowhere particular to be, the Saga manual is quietly, unexpectedly brilliant.
This is the Malaysian car for people who actually like driving. That it costs RM38,000 is either an insult to how good it is, or the most democratic thing the local automotive industry has ever done. Probably both.
Specify the manual. Skip the CVT. Drive it on the Karak Highway at dawn. Report back. You will not regret this.
