Porsche Inaugurates Motorsport Asia Pacific Hub in Shanghai, Cementing Jiading as China’s Racing Epicenter
At the 2021 China Automotive Forum, Porsche unveiled a strategic expansion that integrates local infrastructure, customer accessibility, and a comprehensive driver development pyramid to accelerate motorsport culture in its largest global market.
From June 17 to 19, 2021, the China Automotive Forum convened in Shanghai under the auspices of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), serving as a pivotal gathering for industry leaders to chart the future of Chinese mobility. Within this high-level dialogue, Porsche and the Construction Leading Group of the World-Class Automobile Industry Centre in Jiading District co-hosted a dedicated Motorsports Industry Sub-Forum. The session was not merely ceremonial; it functioned as a strategic blueprint for integrating motorsport into the broader automotive industrial chain. Discussions spanned racing fleets, technical R&D, service trade, and ecosystem development, all aimed at transforming Jiading into a globally recognized motorsport hub. The forum culminated in two landmark announcements: the official inauguration of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Ltd. and the signing of a long-term cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Jiading Comprehensive Bonded Zone.
The establishment of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Ltd. represents a structural innovation in how luxury performance brands operate within China’s regulatory and commercial landscape. As the first luxury automaker to set up an independent entity within the Jiading Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Porsche has effectively localized what was previously a logistically complex import process. Chinese customers can now purchase racing vehicles and related services directly in RMB, bypassing foreign exchange hurdles and import delays. Crucially, clients may store their race cars within the bonded zone, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming overseas shipping between events. This operational shift does more than streamline transactions; it signals Porsche’s commitment to treating Chinese motorsport participants as domestic stakeholders rather than international afterthoughts. Dr.-Ing. Jens Puttfarcken, President and CEO of Porsche China, emphasized that Jiading serves as the “foundation stone” for Porsche’s regional motorsport ambitions, especially as the brand marked its 20th anniversary in mainland China. Alexandre Gibot, Managing Director of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, reinforced this vision, stating the new entity exists to meet surging demand and deliver a richer, more accessible racing experience.
Beyond infrastructure, Porsche is systematically cultivating China’s motorsport culture through a clearly defined competitive pyramid. Motorsport has been intrinsic to Porsche’s identity since its founding, with over 30,000 race wins across six decades. Translating this legacy to China required tailored pathways. The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, now in its 18th season since 2003, remains the region’s premier one-make series and a proven talent incubator; numerous graduates have advanced to elite global championships. Notably, the 2021 season featured the highest number of Chinese drivers in the series’ history, reflecting deepening local engagement. Complementing this elite tier is the Porsche Sports Cup China, introduced in 2019 as a customer-focused club racing platform. Designed with four progressive driving programs, it enables enthusiasts to transition gradually from track-day participants to licensed competitors. Together with the Porsche Experience Centre and top-tier GTE campaigns, these initiatives form a cohesive ladder that nurtures talent at every level while reinforcing brand loyalty through experiential immersion.
This strategic alignment between corporate investment and cultural development occurs against the backdrop of China’s status as Porsche’s largest single market. In the first quarter of 2021 alone, Porsche delivered 21,991 vehicles in China, underscoring the market’s critical importance. With 137 sales sites across mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, the brand has built extensive retail reach. Yet the Jiading initiative reveals a deeper ambition: to evolve beyond transactional relationships into becoming an embedded participant in China’s automotive evolution. By anchoring motorsport operations locally, Porsche ensures that its racing heritage is not imported but cultivated, responsive to local regulations, attuned to domestic talent, and integrated into regional industrial policy.
The 2021 sub-forum and subsequent inaugurations thus mark more than a corporate milestone; they signify a maturation of China’s motorsport ecosystem. Where once racing was perceived as a niche import, it is now being woven into the fabric of national automotive strategy. Porsche’s model combining bonded-zone logistics, tiered competition structures, and public-private collaboration offers a replicable template for other manufacturers seeking meaningful engagement. As Jiading develops into a world-class automobile industry center, Porsche’s presence ensures that speed, engineering excellence, and competitive spirit remain central to its identity. In doing so, the brand honors its past while actively shaping the future of motorsport in the world’s most dynamic automotive market.
