So, what to expect in terms of design and location access of this airport? More importantly, what is the progress so far? Keep reading to get answers to all your questions.

Navi Mumbai Airport : Tracking the Progress

Let’s discuss the timeline of the progress. The following are some of the reported progress on the Navi Mumbai International Airport Project phase1:

October 2020: The Indian Government allotted INR 6,700 Cr for this project.

December 2020: The (MoEFCC) Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change gave a green signal concerning the environmental aspect.

February 2021: The land acquisition process for this Airport project was completed during this time. According to the Maharashtra Govt, the CIDCO- City and Industrial Development Corporation received the land for the project's development.

April 2021: India's PM laid the cornerstone of the Navi Mumbai Airport. This marked the beginning of the construction work for this project.

October 2021: In the auction for the project's construction work, both L&T & GVK won the bid.

And now, the target year for the completion of the project is 2026. A question that follows: What would be the mission objective of the NMIA project?

Navi Mumbai Airport: Key Objectives of the Project

The NMIA project majorly focuses on adopting sustainable and environment-oriented measures. Therefore, the planning of the airport is such that it combines public-private cooperation.

Moreover, this airport will install an in-house solar power plant. Its installation has a mission to cover most of the energy requirements.

Additionally, the plan is to construct a sewage system with the help of machinery like JCB 3DX Xtra. Moreover, the aim is to build a rainwater harvesting, treatment plan, and waste management system.

Apart from the environmental front, the NMIA project will significantly impact the economy. To illustrate, the report suggests that the airport will generate 1.5 million jobs approximately. This job surge would be both direct and indirect around the region.

Above all, the jobs generation would accelerate growth in the tourism, real estate, and hospitality industry.

Moreover, this upcoming airport will serve as a hub for international trade and commerce. As a result, it will be a major boon for the Maharashtrian Economy.

Navi Mumbai Airport: Location, Design, Fundings, and More

This new airport project has several significant features and identities. For instance, in terms of its design, location, connectivity, etc. Hence, below are the details:

Location: As per the reports, the project's site is in the Raigad District, which is in the east of Mumbai City.

Connectivity: This upcoming airport will be interconnected with the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Express Metro Line will be the medium for establishing this connectivity.

Accessibility: The Navi Mumbai Airport location is well-planned. This is because of its proximity to and intersection with other major transportation corridors. For instance- Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Sion-Panvel Expressway, and the upcoming Trans-Harbour Link.

Such comprehensive accessibility will open doors for new opportunities. For example, this would bring people and commerce much closer than before in no time.

Architecture & Design: No official announcements regarding the detailed design blueprint have been made. However, in 2014, the NMIAL did reveal the name of the entity responsible for the airport's design. For instance, Zaha Hadid Architects, aka ZHA, oversees the architecture of the airport's terminal 1 and Air Traffic Control Tower.

Fundings: State Bank of India guaranteed the whole project's debt requirement of Rs. 127.70 billion. This helped Adani Enterprises complete its financial planning for the Navi Mumbai Airport development in March 2022.

This was detailed information on the Navi Mumbai Airport Project.

Also, here's a thing to note: The construction of such a massive scale project would demand gigantic yet innovative machinery like JCB 4dx. This project, however, did face some obstacles. This was even before the launch and during the 1st phase of development.

Navi Mumbai Airport: The Obstacles

The project has faced some delays due to land acquisition, environmental clearance, and other issues. However, the Indian Government 2020 announced the allocation of INR 6,700 crore for the development of Navi Mumbai Airport.

Because the project has expanded coverage and mission, some challenges are inevitable. The NMIA project faced several delays right after its proposal in 1997. These delays were due to several reasons, like funding and land acquisition issues.

However, the project received approval in 2017. After the project's consent, the Maharashtra government assorted a budget for the project. The budget was worth INR 16, 704 cr for the overall development.

Regardless of the challenges in the past, the project is now accelerating. Moreover, it has a completion target of 2026.

Wrapping Up

To conclude, the NMIA is a much-needed extension to the aviation industry of India. This is because it would ease the congestion at the existing Mumbai airport. Besides, it would be a boon for the local and Indian economies.

Furthermore, Navi Mumbai Airport will set a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure projects. Combining all these achievements, this project will be a major milestone. Both in the Indian Aviation and construction industry.
