Jeep Will Give You a Free Wrangler But Only If You're Named George Washington, and the US Wins the World Cup

Yes, you read that correctly. Jeep is betting on America's founding father and America's soccer team. The odds? Not great.

Most automakers are intensely proud of the countries they come from. Jeep, which literally incorporates the American flag into some of its logos, might be the most patriotic of them all.

With the 2026 World Cup kicking off this week, the U.S. men's national team plays its first match tonight against Paraguay. Jeep decided to show its national pride in the most outrageous way possible.

The automaker is promising to give away up to 100 free Wrangler SUVs. But there is a catch. Actually, there are several catches.

The Two Massive Conditions

Let me break this down for you.

Condition One: You must be named George Washington. Legally. First name George. Last name Washington. No nicknames. No middle-name workarounds. Your driver's licence must say George Washington.

Condition Two: The United States men's national team must win the entire World Cup.

Not to make the quarterfinals. Not reach the semifinals. Win the whole thing. Lift the trophy at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

The Odds Are Not in Your Favour

Let's be honest about the USMNT's chances.

Yes, the team has some fun players. Tim Weah brings speed. Sergiño Dest provides attacking flair from the fullback position. Weston McKennie is a midfield workhorse. And of course, there is Christian Pulisic, Captain America himself, who can be brilliant on his day.

But winning the World Cup? That is a different level entirely.

To put it in perspective: one automotive journalist suggested that Lance Stroll winning this year's Formula 1 Driver's World Championship is more likely than the USMNT playing in the final on July 19.

That is not a compliment.

The Fine Print

Jeep's offer sounds generous, up to 100 free Wranglers, but the fine print reveals the reality.

Registration for the competition opened on June 11 and closes on July 19 at 3:00 p.m. ET. That is the exact time the World Cup final kicks off. Jeep is not waiting for the final whistle. They are closing registration at kickoff.

According to the official terms, the offer extends only to the first 100 eligible George Washingtons who register. That means even if every condition is met, only 100 people will actually receive a vehicle.

Eligible participants must be:

Legal residents of the United States

Age 18 or older

Legally named "George Washington" (first name George, last name Washington)

Should You Change Your Name?

If you are reading this and your name is not George Washington, you might be wondering: Is it worth legally changing your name for a shot at a free Wrangler?

Probably not.

A Wrangler starts around $32,000 for a base model. A legal name change costs a few hundred dollars and takes weeks to process. But here is the problem: the USMNT would still need to win the World Cup.

Even if you legally changed your name today, you would be betting on one of the biggest upsets in sports history. The USMNT has never won a World Cup. Their best finish was third place in 1930, when only 13 teams participated.

This year's tournament features 48 teams. The path to the final is long, difficult, and filled with traditional powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, and Spain.

The Marketing Genius Behind the Madness

From a marketing perspective, this campaign is brilliant.

Jeep is generating headlines without spending a dime on Super Bowl ads. The story is being shared across social media, news outlets, and water cooler conversations. Everyone is talking about Jeep during World Cup week.

And here is the kicker: Jeep probably will not have to give away a single Wrangler.

The USMNT is not expected to win. The chances of 100 people named George Washington registering before the deadline are slim. The chances of all those conditions aligning? Nearly zero.

But if by some miracle the USMNT does the impossible and lifts the trophy, Jeep will have the most feel-good marketing story of the decade. A few million dollars worth of Wranglers is a small price to pay for that level of brand loyalty and national goodwill.

Jeep's World Cup promotion is equal parts patriotic, absurd, and brilliant.

If your name is George Washington, register now. You have nothing to lose except a few minutes of your time. And if the USMNT somehow wins the whole thing, you might just drive away in a free Wrangler.

For the rest of us? We will be watching the tournament like everyone else, hoping for a miracle, expecting the usual, and laughing at the sheer audacity of a car company that bet on America's founding father to deliver a World Cup victory.
