Omoda & Jaecoo Malaysia has officially given the public its first look at the Jaecoo J5 EV, previewed at the Oh My Meow Expo 2026 held at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre. The all‑electric version joins the petrol‑powered J5 launched earlier this year, and stays true to the model’s signature pet‑friendly positioning. The display unit was even fitted with playful cat‑ear accents, whisker decals, and a tail to match the event theme.

Set to arrive later this year, the J5 EV will be locally assembled (CKD) from launch, bringing it in line with Malaysia’s national automotive policies and expected to help keep pricing competitive.

Powertrain & Performance

Gone is the 1.5‑litre turbocharged petrol engine, replaced by a front‑mounted electric motor rated at 211 PS (155 kW) and 288 Nm of torque. This output matches the specifications offered in Thailand and Indonesia, allowing the SUV to sprint from 0–100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 175 km/h.

Battery & Charging

Malaysia will receive a 58.9 kWh CATL LFP battery pack, the same unit used in Europe and Australia. This is larger than the 50.6 kWh pack in Thailand, and slightly smaller than the 60.9 kWh Gotion battery used in Indonesia.

  • Range: 402 km on the stricter WLTP cycle, translating to roughly 390 km under real‑world conditions comparable to the Indonesian version and significantly better than the Thai model’s ~340 km WLTP figure.

  • Charging: Supports 130 kW DC fast charging, taking the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes. It also accepts up to 11 kW AC charging for overnight home use, and includes Vehicle‑to‑Load (V2L) capability to power appliances or devices on the go.

Chassis & Dimensions

The J5 EV retains the same suspension layout as its petrol sibling: MacPherson struts at the front and multilink setup at the rear, though the system has been retuned to handle the extra 275 kg of kerb weight added by the battery pack. Ground clearance remains unchanged at 175 mm, while the overall body shape and proportions stay true to the SUV’s upright, boxy design.

Exterior & Interior

Visually, the EV is distinguished from the ICE model by:

  • A closed‑off front fascia with a slimmer upper section, an active‑shutter lower air intake, a body‑coloured perforated panel, and a “BEV” badge.

  • Unique 18‑inch two‑tone aerodynamic alloy wheels to reduce drag.

  • A powered charging port is located on the driver’s side front fender.

Inside, the layout mirrors the petrol version:

  • A minimalist dashboard with a waterfall‑style centre console and few physical buttons.

  • Instrumentation remains an 8.88‑inch seven‑segment LCD, paired with a 13.2‑inch portrait‑oriented touchscreen for infotainment and vehicle settings.

  • Upholstery uses TÜV‑certified anti‑bacterial, scratch‑resistant, low‑VOC faux leather, finished here with blue piping and stitching.

Pet‑Focused Features

True to its branding, the J5 EV includes:

  • Pet Mode: Keeps the air‑conditioning running at a safe temperature while the vehicle is locked, allowing owners to leave pets inside temporarily.

  • Camping Mode: Maintains climate control and power supply for extended stops.

  • Cargo space: 480‑litre boot (same as ICE model), plus an additional 35‑litre front trunk for extra storage.

Equipment & Safety

Standard equipment mirrors the higher‑spec petrol variant:

  • Power‑adjustable and ventilated front seats

  • Double‑glazed front side windows

  • 1.45 m² panoramic glass roof

  • Dual‑zone automatic climate control

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

  • 50 W Qi wireless charging pad

  • 360‑degree camera system with chassis transparency view

  • Powered tailgate

Safety kit includes six airbags and a full suite of driver‑assist systems:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go

  • Lane Centring Assist

  • Curve Speed Reduction

  • Evasive Steering Assist

  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Collision Prevention

  • Rear Cross‑Traffic Alert with Automatic Braking

  • Door Opening Warning
