I Spent Months Hunting for an E30 Then a Text Message Changed Everything

The E30 Obsession That Wasn’t

A few years back, I decided it was finally time. Time to take on a proper BMW project of my own. And like pretty much everyone in that position, I went straight for the E30.

I had the whole build mapped out in my head. Late plastic-bumper coupe, E36 M3 drivetrain swap, M-Tech II bodykit inspired by the E30 320iS, refreshed interior and exterior. The only thing I hadn’t figured out was the wheels which, honestly, should have been my first clue that my heart wasn’t fully in it.

What followed was months of increasingly desperate searching. Friends across the country were on standby, ready to go pick up a car at short notice. As the weeks dragged on, my standards quietly dropped chrome bumpers became acceptable, sedans entered the picture, and the original vision of the build started to blur.

And then I had to be honest with myself about something.

Coming Clean

Here it is: I’m not really an E30 person.

I know. Put down the pitchforks.

To be clear I love E30s. I enjoy looking at them, working on them, driving them. And I still want to build one someday. But I’ve never been the kind of person who eats, sleeps, and breathes the E30 the way the truly devoted do. To me, they’re good cars reasonably attractive, reasonably capable that have become, if we’re being honest, a bit unreasonably priced. I feel like I missed the window before I even knew there was one.

What I actually needed was something more me. And I didn’t even know what that was until a text message landed on my phone one morning.

The One That Was Always Meant to Be

A former work colleague, now a finance manager at a large BMW dealership, sent me a photo with a simple message: “Check out what just pulled into the service drive.”

It was an E34 Touring. Clean. Really clean.

I knew immediately. This was my car.

Within minutes I’d replied, got put in touch with the owner, and struck a deal. Because here’s the thing while I’d been chasing E30s, I had actually spent most of my life quietly in love with E34s. Even before I considered myself a BMW person. To me, the E34 always looked like what the E30 grew up to become a little larger, a little more luxurious, with a shape that somehow perfectly bridged the aesthetics of the 1980s and 1990s without feeling like it belonged fully to either decade.

My idea of a great BMW has never been an all-out track weapon. It’s a car that offers genuine luxury with just enough of a performance edge to keep things interesting something you’d happily drive every day and equally happily push a little harder on a weekend. The E34 nails that balance in a way no E30 ever could for me. It’s my Platonic ideal of what a BMW should be.

The Car Itself

The specific car is a 1994 530iT a Touring wagon, because of course it is. It lived a pampered early life owned by a tennis pro, who eventually traded it in when the M60 engine started playing up in the ways that M60 engines are unfortunately known to do. A replacement engine later, it found its next home with a Department of Defense employee and his wife, who kept it dealer-serviced for years before it eventually made its way to me.

Two decades on, the car has held up remarkably well though frequent washes meant water found its way into the usual E34 rust spots, as it always does. I’ve been collecting parts for two years now, and the project is finally getting serious. A house purchase sidelined things when a rusted fuel tank took the car off the road for nearly a year, but encouragement from friends and the wider BMW community has reignited the fire.

What Comes Next

I’ll be documenting the whole build as it unfolds and I genuinely want input along the way. Some decisions will be small, like which shift knob to go with. Others will be bigger, like whether to tackle the headliner myself or find an upholstery shop. Either way, the goal is the same: to turn this well-loved, well-travelled E34 into the BMW I’ve always dreamed of owning.

It took a wrong turn down an E30 rabbit hole to get here. But sometimes the best things find you precisely because you were looking somewhere else.
