How to Get Around Koh Samui

As one of Thailand's biggest beach capitals, Koh Samui is an island that is relatively easy to navigate using both public transport and private means. Whether you are exploring the island's best beaches or hopping from one full moon party to another, there is a wide variety of local transport options to choose from. Here's a rundown of some of the most convenient ways to get around during a holiday in Koh Samui.

1. Songthaews

Songtheaws are perhaps the most efficient way to travel long distances during a getaway in Koh Samui. These converted pick-up trucks with two benches in the back can fit about 10 passengers at a time although it is not uncommon for locals to ride on the back bumper. Cheap and fast, Songtheaws also have overhead racks so that tourists travelling with shopping bags or luggage can store their belongings safely. The only downside to relying on Songtheaws is that they are not ideal for long-distance travel and the vehicles operate in mainly touristy areas. But they are perfect for exploring nearly every beach town in Koh Samui with the exception of Choeng Mon as these vehicles serve Koh Samui's 51-kilometre-long main ring road seven days a week. You can hail Songtheaws from the side of the road but remember to pay in cash with change.

2. Taxis/Cabs

While it may not be the most cost-effective way to travel around the island, taxis are the best way to get from Point A to Point B for those travelling in groups. Those who are based at the Avani+ Samui Resort or any similar luxury resort in Koh Samui can rely on their hotel's own taxi fleet. Beware of hailing cabs off the streets of Koh Samui, as most are not metered so the fare is really up to the driver. It is best to negotiate a fair price for the journey before boarding a taxi as local taxi drivers are known to overcharge unsuspecting foreigners.

3. Motorbike Taxis

Costing commuters a fraction of what it would cost to ride a taxi, motorbike taxis or scooter taxis, as they are locally known, are a great alternative for those with a love of speed and daredevil driving antics. While boarding a scooter is not recommended for those who are faint of heart or those who feel clinging onto a stranger rather embarrassing, it is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to get around.

4. Car Rentals

Tourists who possess an international driving license can also rent a car for the duration of their visit. This is ideal for those who would rather take matters into their own hands and embark on a midnight drive to a remote beach on a whim. There are numerous car rental companies on the island to choose from and the rates are pretty competitive.

5. Scooter Rentals

Travellers with a penchant for motorbikes, on the other hand, can rent a scooter for the trip. Considered one of the best ways to see the island at one's own pace, scooters of various sizes and make are available through rental companies. Make sure the bike you select is in top condition as the accident rate on Samui roads is pretty high and some dubious rental shops are known to charge extra for safety gear such as helmets.

6. Walking

Backpackers and those who are on a budget may also consider walking around Koh Samui as most beach towns are actually easy to navigate on foot. Just make sure that you have plenty of bottled water and are wearing a pair of good walking shoes or sandals as it can get very dry and humid during the daytime.
